Bensen days 2018

A fun Friday at Bensen Days!

I wondered by Joe’s Honda powered Aviomania and was very impressed with the workmanship.

Saw a very nice Yamaha powered Dominator and a nice panel in a Sport Copter.

The pilot’s briefing was a little late with lots of good information given by Roy Davis; an airshow performer and airline pilot.

The line of gyroplanes kept growing despite lot of flying going on.

I thought I had spotted a new Magni Tail dragger till I looked a little closer.

I did my hour on the radio making pilots aware for the gyroplane event in progress and coordinating the arrival and departures of the fixed wing aircraft amid the swarms of gyroplanes.

Tomorrow I hope to fly with Chris in the Titanium Explorer; a remarkable woman who was probably responsible for the most gyroplane smiles at the event. She flies a Candy Apple Red Titanium Explorer that is so bright it screwed up the color on my camera. It was fun to watch her smooth flying with the big red machine flashing in the sun.

I did get to fly with Chris in the Titanium Explorer and had a lot of fun playing bad student and seeing how easy to correct it was.

We flew out to a nice practice area and tried turns around a point using the wrong rudder pedal and slowing from 60kts to 40kts. The machine handled it beautiful and I would have been able to talk a recalcitrant student through their errors.

Next was S turns over a road and we found some ugly winds while playing the over controlling over banking student. Again the Titanium Explorer handled it beautifully losing very little altitude and requiring very little correction.

Recognition and recovery from low airspeed and a high rate of descent was the next exercise and the power on recovery was very nice again losing very little altitude.

Next was a power off recognition and recovery from low airspeed and a high rate of descent intentionally lowering the nose a little too much and recovery was still smooth and nice as could be. The rotor covers a lot of rpm during this maneuver and the cyclic remained the smoothest in memory.

We headed back to the airport for a power on landing with a bit of a cross wind. It was easy to calibrate my round out and touch down was as nice as could be. The pilot’s briefing was about to start but Chris wanted to do one more round and did a very nice power off landing demonstrating the rudder effectiveness perfectly.

At the awards banquet Chris was given an achievement award in the form of a boomerang (Chris is from Australia) signed by her many friends at Bensen Days. Every inch was covered with the memories and well wishes of friends.
