I would like opinions regarding moderate back country gyro flying like UTs Dirty Devil, Hidden Splendor, Mexican Mountain, etc. I used to own a Butterfly Aurora about 12 years ago. But it was too underpowered to carry fuel and camping equipment. My airfield is 6500 feet and I sometimes fly in to Negrito NM (8000 feet). I cannot find anyone who flies a gyro backcountry camping in the Southwest. With today's more powerful gyros and their STOL capabilities why are few if any gyros flying this kind of backcountry? Is it because of rotorhead fragility on rough terrain or fear of prop rocks? Thanks, Chet

TAG's Titanium Explorer has an option called the Kelpie - with larger 600 Cesna tires and longer rotor, as well as the standard massive cargo storage pods with unique hatches to allow long items such as rifles, tent poles and fishing gear!

TAG gyros were designed & are built (kits too) for the rugged Aussie outback conditions and many operate of rough dirt strips. The full carbon-on carbon spar TAG rotor has a lifetime in excess of 5000 hours and is very tough! Rock-guard on keel keeps rock off prop.

A favorite engine with these gyros is the Steve Paulet mod on the 912 ULS - can be tuned to 135-145HP - is very reliable & has awesome power.

PS - my solo-time & first-build was aButterfly Aurora ...loved it - but too heavy for XC + extra fuel + no cargo options!
Love my TAGs - flown from KS to FL & back in (Jan/Feb 2017). - AZ to El mirage (2017) and my main means of transport for 6 weeks - 60 flight hours/3000N-miles in Australia...when I picked up my new one in April/May 2017!

Here's your back country gyro selection from Magni. You have to fly one off airport to really appreciate how incredibly smooth the STOL gear is. Magni's are extremely stable in flight as well.

You can get impressive STOL performance, rivalling that of gyros, out of fixed wing aircraft these days, with cheap operational cost and good payloads.
