I decided to start a new thread on this because any response would get lost in my previous thread regarding axle struts.

I am going to be putting brakes on my bee, therefore I don't want to buy the Starbee wheels and axles. In a previous thread I had mentioned that I was looking for axles, and someone said that I could use regular old 5/8ths inch chromoly tubing, or even bar stock. If I do that, how do I make up the 3/8ths inch difference between the inside diameter of the axle struts and the outside diameter of the axles?

And let's please not make this thread a "let's talk Marty out of installing brakes" thread. My mind is made up.

Marty, I'm not sure how the axel attaches to a Starbee, but if it is like a Bensen type gyro then a good axel/wheel/brake system is Hegar. The following, according to the LEAF catalog, includes two disc brakes, two 5/8" axels, hand operated 3/4" master cylinder, bleeded kit, brake line, fittings, etc:

The above is for 6" wheels (they also make 5"). You then need the Hegar aluminum wheels and tires.

I think most people that build Bee's usually just machine a piece of steel to the specs in the plans or have someone else do it for them.

Marty, I have an extra set of Gyrobee axle inserts here at the house. I'll post a picture a bit later for you.
