I am strongly considering purchasing the AV20 S with the ADSB Tail Beacon Combo for my AR-1 gyroplane. There is an excellent YouTube video about setting the squawk code for an AV20 E but I cannot find anything about an AV20 S. I assume it would be the same? If by chance you own this combo, are you pleased with it? Thank you for your replies or suggestions.

I have the AV-20E and tailBeaconX on my AR-1 gyro. The previous owner installed them. They work together OK. However, the tailBeaconX had to be mounted vertically on the side of the Gyro. Previous owner stated it would not work properly mounted horizontally. I think Abid recommends the uAvionix echoUAT + SkyFx bundle which has ADS-B in & out and is mounted under the dash - out of sight. You may want to check with Abid on this.

All aircraft VHF Communication, Transponder and ELT antennas are to always be mounted vertically. This is because those transmit and receive signals are "Vertically Polarized." Aircraft VHF Navigation, Localizer and Glideslope receive antennas are mounted horizontally, because the transmit and receive signals are "Horizontally Polarized."

Looking at the tailBeaconXTM TSO User and Installation Guide, https://uavionix.com/downloads/tailbeaconx/tailBeaconX TSO User and Installation Guide UAV-1004270-001 Rev B.pdf , the AV20S will not control the tail beacon. You would need the AV20E instead.

Thank you. The YouTube video is the “E” model. Now I understand! Thanks! Love this forum for the help offered by the flying community!

I am considering using a clamping device and making a bracket to install the Tail Beacon X on the mast of my AR-1 Gyroplane. I wrote UAvionix about this, and their statement was they are unsure if the vibration would cause a problem for reception. I’m trying to see if others might have any experience in mounting an antenna such as this on the mast?

Why are you doing it this way. It won't be a clean install.
We use uAvionix echoUAT + SkyFx and yes they have an AD to add a simple encoder for very remote areas for full ADSB coverage but it is a clean install with nothing visible. You need a transponder like Sandia STX165 with it and everything fits, looks clean and works. Just saying.

Abid - I am doing my research at this time to optimize my purchase. I have not made any purchase. My AR-1 DOES NOT have a tail beacon of any design. The Tail Beacon X has a bright LED LIGHT. Recently on a landing, someone who was not communicating at Anson County, KFP, A GA pilot, flew under me while I was on my final to land. He never one time answered my inquiry. He taxied back and departed, w/o communicating; I could not have a conversation with the pilot - probably a student pilot, or his radio was out. The bright Tail Beacon X is a safety item since I would mount it facing the rear.

Also, a bracket is ready made for the mast - no drilling: https://pitstopusa.com/products/ub-...are-tubing-1-2-thread?variant=48872554692913; I will need to buy a bud box to install the Tail Beacon X. I will need to run a fitting for power and ground.

The tail beacon is an ADSB out with a transponder, antenna and a white, rear facing position light. The AV20E allows you to tune the xponder squawk code and gives you the following, 12 in 1 funtionality Customizable Display, though I am not sure what would be most useful:

-AoA Display (Voice Alerting & Peaks)
-G Meter Display (Voice Alerting & Peaks)
-Attitude (Roll / Pitch)
-Slip / Skid Indication (NEW!)
-Clock (GMT / Local)
-Outside Air Temperature (C / F)
-Bus Voltage Display
-Dual User Timers (Count Up / Down)
-Engine Run Timer
-Flight Timer
-Density Altitude Display
-True Airspeed Display (Kts / Mph)
-Audio Alerts (AoA, G, Roll Limits

So, these two units would provide everything except ADSB- in. Again, I am simply at the inquiry, research level at this time. And, I am wanting to get the best bang (and most reliable system) for my buck. I would appreciate any questions or suggestions about where I am with this research. I do appreciate you.Richard Randolph

Well I am quite sure on the mast its not going to work properly. Did you have your strobes on when this happened. If that gyroplane was purchased without any lights, Strobes would be the first thing I would install. There are no wings on a rotorcraft and people are looking for wings so a strobe light is the best chance of getting noticed. I know the tail-beacon. Gary's gyroplane from North Carolina that we just an annual on had it. Not my choice because the way it sticks out there but your mileage may vary.
