My wife would kill me if I continued to bid on this Auto Gyro - working on getting out of debt right now. If someone gets it - would love a free ride sometime.

Renebates.com has a 2010 Auto Gyro Calidus Aircraft that was flown by the Tomball Police Department and maintained there as well. Current Bid is $8100.00 and someone with $$$ can steal it today (17th of June) when Auction Ends.

went for $27,600 still not bad
Why did they sell it. It had 1018 hours shown on hobbs. If it has not been crashed. It could easily go another 1000 hours

The Tomball Police department doesn't use the gyros anymore.

Does that mean they did not find gyroplanes fit for purpose? Or they lost the pilot?

It was a public use aircraft. Maybe a silly question, but what kind of airworthy certificate does this aircraft have?

Chrisk, most public use aircraft are maintained to FAA standards. The repair station at my airport services all the local and state equipment. It’s MY OPINION that they do it for two reasons. 1) They don’t have personal skilled in aircraft maintenance or facilities capable and 2) it’s hard to defend liability in court if you deviate from the expected norm.

Didn't one of their gyroplanes have an rollover incident that caused quite a bit of damage a few years back? Maybe the expense of fixing that caused consternation w/ the city bean-counters?

The issues is not how the aircraft is maintained. It is: "Does it have an airworthy certificate, and what kind?" It is most probably not amateur built experimental, but I guess it could be. Primary? Standard? Something else? And just as important, what kind of airworthy certificate is the new owner going to end up with?

So, it is likely the new owner will end up with an "Experimental Exhibition Only" airworthy certificate.

Wonder if they could just buy a new chassis, and use the parts from this to make a new Calidus?

I believe the winning bidder is a CFI/A&P Mechanic in North Carolina. He called me Friday morning with questions about the auction; and he is certified by the Calidus company for doing overhauls and such to the brand. With the engine alone being worth the $20K; not a bad deal for the AC.

Tomball stopped flying the Gyro's last fall; and I believe they are now sharing Helo Services across departments under a new LE Grant Program - the Admin listed on the Auction stated that there was a previous "crash" and due to liability related to their insurance for the Police Department, they have gone to the helicopter platform instead.

The two Gyro's were also built for another city first before Tomball acquired them.
