Wombat 1

Hi Everyone,
First time on the forum so I suppose a bit of background is going to be required before I shoot off into a specific area.
First, why am I here?
My aim of this forum is to choose and then build a Gyro that will allow me to fly out of my property. As a moderately experienced fixed winger (see below) I know nothing much about Gyros however I feel that it will be a good balance between cost and flexibility that I need to succeed in my plan.
My Background:
I’m an ex-mil pilot that has moved to New Zealand. I have a modest amount of experience on VSTOL aircraft (DHC4, RAAF Caribou ) and spent most of my time flying around Birdy’s backyard. If he had a radio he would have heard the ‘Wombat’ callsign and probably can give you an explanation of what a Wombat is if you haven’t heard of it before. Currently I’m becoming a flying instructor over here in NZ and own a share in the grand old lady of the sky, the DC3. I don’t fly professionally any more and this is my next Winter project (planning to start in May 05 for you Northerner’s)
My initial thoughts:
I have been following the Groen Bros since 1998 when I saw a SparrowHawk or similar on a program called Towards 2000. I’m after a safe, reliable Gyro with decent performance. I think at this stage that I will about 2500’ to clear a 50’ obstacle. This has leant me in the direction of the Sparrow Hawk however I’m open to views. Things I would like some input on are Blades, Engines, Building it to the best standard that I can using smart innovations like Ken’s pre-rotor arrangement, Alex’s relocation of the Rotor brake controls and the electric trims.
The Plan:
As I see it this is what I need to do from a high level perspective.
Decide on the Gyro type…. (Dec 04)
Decide on the options, Blades, Engine, etc….(Jan 05)
Sort out my training (Feb 05)
Order the kit. (Feb 05)
Tell the wife (Hmmm tough one, might try the night of my birthday at a public place)
Build my strip (Once the yelling has stopped)
Build the Gyro (Start May 05)
Fly it (Sept 05)
Smile (on going)
So there we go… I look forward to your inputs and to sharing my plans and goals as I go along.
Cheers
Andrew
