Here I am,just a simple cow grower, play'n house maid coz the wife is away[again] :( ,sitt'n outside under the verander hav'n a durrie,in the center of Oz.My nearest neibour is 50km away, bout 70km to the nearest shop of any kind , 160km to the first sealed road and 350km to the only town for 500km. It's bout 30c,9pm and this bloke I'v never even talked to before rings up out of the blue from his truck phone in north USA at bout 4 AM were it's bout 1/2 c to have a yarn bout gyros. :p
This technolagy stuff is unbelivable. :D

Thanx for the call Gidgee,it's real appreciated that someone on the other side of the world,a world away from here, would ring to talk gyros.[and a few other things] :)

Kinda makes me feel important.

No worries Birdy, appreciate u taking the time to share your opinions and knowledge.
Thaks again.
Marc

How is Marc Birdy? Strange to hear an Oz voice on the Yank line!!!!!

I am doing my damdest to find him a stable gyro before he gets here in January.

Can any Aussies help? Would like a 4 stroke CLT machine built tough for the outback.

Aussie Paul. :)

Holy penguin, Birdy! What did you guys do before the Internet and cell or satellite phones? Do you receive TV? I suppose you can with satellite TV. How did you wind up in Alice Springs? Is it a family handed-down ranch? Have you ever lived in a big town or city? What a great place if you don't want to deal with dick-head neighbors.

Ken,we can get sat TV,but opt not to[it's full of crap anyway]and befor internet and sat fones, gess we just kept ourselves busy and ignored the rest of the world.
Was born in Alice[I didn't have any choise in that] and have seen some of Oz,none that I liked tho.Never have and never will live in a town or city, the neibors here are too close.[and most of them are good neibors]

Wot did you blokes do before sat coms and such???

Well Birdy,

Where I grew up, in north east New Jersey just outside of NY City, there were more than 10 million people in a circle with my house as the center and with a radius the same distance as that between you and your nearest neighbor.

There never was any shortage of things to do or see.

And here we are, a world away from each other, leading, and having led, two very different lives in two very different places, having a nice talk about Gyros and such.

Go figure.

10 F*&)$%$# million!!!!!!!!!!.
Mmmmmm.........I gess you'd be one of them people who reckons I'm isolated ay??

And to think both you and me never had any shortage of things to do and see, just different things.

Wot do you do for a crust Peter???

Two compleatly different people,different lives,different places,same interest.........amaz'n shit ay.

BTW,I had a couple of pommy backpackers work'n for me a while back, and when the camp fire subject got to "London",my head woz spin'n.When you concider where they cum from,it's no wunder they think here is "nowhere".

Different strokes for different folks

Different strokes for different folks

Birdy,

I live about 80klms west of Brisbane, far enough away not to be called city folk or coastal, but also not far enough away to have to be dead practical about every day things in life. I listen to the metropolitan media who dare to suggest that we are bushies, that when Premier Pete travels to Goondiwindi he is in South West Queensland. What a load of absolute rubbish. He's less than halfway across Queensland. If Brisbane people could not access fresh bread or milk every day they'd think their throat was cut. If you had fresh bottled milk or sliced bread once a fortnight, you be living it up.

So it goes for different people around the world. Without sat Phones and TV you learn to make conversation, to do without the material things that others consider a necessity. Even though you are doing it tough by my standards, you are probably a damn side happier.

And Birdy.... you might have some of these yanks fooled about the simple cow grower bit, but I know that SCG's in your country would be dead broke inside the first 12 months. You're a survivor and I dips me lid to you.

Ted

Well go ahead and blush, .......who's going to see it anyway??? Your wifes away and the cows probably don't mind. haha

This is utterly fascinating, to be able to communicate with people thousands and thousands of miles away and get a glimpse of how other people live and their views on things. I don't know what the hell we did before the Internet. I can remember when I was a kid in Chicago and we didn't have a TV yet and the Internet was something that would have been unfathomable at the time. It is very amazing shit. I would love to visit you Birdy, and see a completely different angle from how I was raised and live. Plus I think it would be a pleasure to personally meet you and tip one...or two. I don't suppose I could convince you to visit San Diego.....there are only about a million of us clustered here.

You live in what?

You live in what?

Sorry Mate, but you live in a human beehive.... Birdy and his Missus lives on 750,000 acres. It'll be like oil and water. :p His nearest neighbour is 50 klms away when he's home, your nearest neighbour is standing beside you.

Birdy,

Right now I'm part owner of a furniture store and have to do a bit of everything to keep it going, but I've done a few different things in my life.

Isolated is as isolated does. There are a lot of ignorant folks in the big city that never open their eyes and see what's all around them. They're bored! I don't think you have to be swimming in people to have a good life. In fact the older I get the more I think that too many people just get in the way of what's important.

I could use some isolation.

Thats why flying is so neat....you are up there all alone away from the "surface dwellers" ... :D

Muster'n is probably the only time I do get lonely/bored here :( ,sit'n on me ass for hours at a time look'n at the ground, not very stimulateing. [plenty of time for think'n]

No ken, thanx for the offer but I reckon if I was in a place like that I'd panic. [a post card would be scarey enough. :p ]

Alot of people reckon I should go to a big city to experiance wot its like,.........my answer every time is simply,WHY.

I know wot I'v got,I know how lucky I am and appreciate my way of life, and I wouldn't swap it for the world. :) [probably one reason why I haven't had a holiday in 10 years.]

Hearing how some of you blokes live and all the hassels that go with it makes me appreciate my lot even more. ;)
Sorry,I'm not swap'n with anyone. :D

Just curious, birdy, how do you connect to the internet? Did they eventually run wires out your way?

Someday, if one of us were to strike it rich, rich enough to buy a trip on Qantas and ship a gyro, would you be up for a yank to come fly with you? One at a time, of course, so things wouldn't get too crowded...

Some one put a repeater up there somewhere [sat] Paul,we're linked through that for the internet.
Our phone works through a network of microwave repeater towers[wireless].
99% of our power[electricity] cums from the sun [solor panels] and a wind turbine systm I built years ago.
We only burn bout 15000 liters of desiel a year[one 12 monthly delivery], most of that gos to pumping water [underground]and driv'n round the joint.

Except for a poxedup ,poor excuse for a road,[more like a cleared line] we have no physical link to anywhere.

And if any of you blokes are go'n within 200 miles of my frount door without drop'n in I'll..................I'll think of sumth'n.

Geess Birdy you've gone and got all technical with the little pics at the top of your posts, hmmm very impresive :)
