I was looking at aircraft pictures recently. I saw several aircraft, that I thought were in Australia. They had registration numbers with a "G" prefix. I thought "VH" was an Australian aircraft registration prefix and "G" was UK.

Just curious.

Jim - you are correct VH is the ICAO national prefix for Australia.

However Australian gyros are not governed by the Australian CAA ( CASA ) - they are governed by ASRA sports rotorcraft ( gyros ), an internal club and the prefix they choose is "G-" - G for gyro

ASRA use G plus numerics ( thisis not an ICAO issued prefix )

UK aircraft/gliders/helicopters/gyros are all governed by the UK CAA and use the ICAO national prefix of G followed by four letters
