About to Begin

FJR, I'm so happy for you! I remember those early days fondly. Enjoy your training, and most importantly, take your time.
I look forward to hearing about your progress. I couldn't imagine training for 2hrs at a time; the most I ever did was 1 and that took a lot out of me.

My sessions were 2 hours long, 40-50 mins flying, then time for water. Commute was 2.5 hrs each way.

Fourth lesson today. It’s incredible draining. At times I felt I was doing well, and at times I felt like an idiot. But it’s really fun and cool!

Do you think you could do 4 or 5 hours of flight lessons in a day??
If only I had a $1 for every time I have been asked that by people coming from out of town

I actually told Jon I was at the limit of my brain before we got to the end of the two hours! Turns around a point, terrain following at low level, and touch and goes plus forcing myself to remember the basics from lesson three (like pitching up to maintain altitude in turns) as well as when to use the rudder on TNGs, throttle control, plus being afraid of getting too close to the ground…. Many more I felt, but can’t elucidate. I’m sooooo glad I have a great CFI, and time to let it seep into natural behavior.

So no, trying anything like you mentioned seems antithetical to absorbing knowledge.

There's a reason that college semester courses meet three times a week for an hour each over 15 weeks instead of three 15 hour days in a row.

Some things just take time to develop. You can't make a baby in one month by using nine women.

Never heard that phrase before, but I like it. It took me 10 years to get good at classical piano as a young man. I started with chopsticks-like material and it was hard. Every stage was hard, and even when my lessons ended, progressing was still hard (learning jazz, improv, etc.). I see this training similarly, and look forward to the challenges.

By the way, it can be draining for the CFI, too. Constant vigilance with a student takes more out of you than just flying yourself around.

I totally appreciate that! His instructions to me are clear and precise so I know his head is three steps in front of what I’m doing. That can’t be easy. I’m over controlling the aircraft, too fast on stick and throttle, and over bank. But, I never feel like he’s criticizing me, merely teaching me. Kudos to Jon as an instructor.

When I was being trained. The standard was 30 minutes of flight time was the limit. Beyond that you do not retain anything learned and mistakes seem to compound.

Initial training done 50 minutes flying followed with a break and discussion. Most in one day was 3 sessions.

Prepping for check ride endorsement did 4 50min sessions in one day with about 2hrs between sessions.
