    One-Design Helicopter, anyone?

Thanks Barney. The belt system I thought was an original idea but I think the Russian micron coaxial uses a similar drive. I also thought in the beginning that using an outboard engine was original but soon found out it had been done many times😀 Liked your scorpion hovering video 👍 Francois...

    One-Design Helicopter, anyone?

I've been following you guys and learning from your comments and projects, there's some really knowledgeable and clever people on this forum. I'm still trying to get my coaxial off the ground, it's getting close but not quite there. Building aluminium 2stroke expansion chambers at the moment to...

Some testing of the cyclic left and right. All seems ok. The force required to move the stick is harder than expected but I think I can improve this. I've got the machine to lift an estimated 90-95% of the craft including myself but that's it for now. A tuned exhaust is next.

First helicopter lesson in an R22

The analogy of the tractor split braking is the perfect example for me to remember, I can quickly visualise in my head what happens when pressing one particular pedal. Thanks

First helicopter lesson in an R22

Thanks for the comments, interesting reading indeed! I mentioned the collective and pedals were intuitive and the collective certainly was but in fact although seemingly straight forward pressing left pedal = turn to the left, I was actually pressing the right pedal instinctively to turn left...

First helicopter lesson in an R22

Today I had a great experience in trying to hover an R22. Previously I had a 5 minute go on the cyclic only with an R44. The experience with the 44 was encouraging as I didn't really go too far out of control, I thought because of some experience flying rc helicopters. However the 22 today...

update on progress. I have spun the blades up to a maximum of 850 rrpm and they ran pretty smooth without any adjustment from the static span-wise and chord-wise balancing I did. I increased the pitch from 2 degrees to 4 degrees and it lifted the front of the helicopter off the ground but would...

Thanks for sharing the pictures Brian. That's certainly not the easiest of shapes to hold, well done and they look great! 👍

    Wireless Rotor tach

So clever and a great sense of humour. I do enjoy your videos. The refresh frequency looks nice and quick, I bought some cheap digital rpm meters on eBay and the refresh frequency is definitely lacking.

Latest attempt at getting airborne on battery power.

Think I'll let someone else take that risk 😆I'm good enough at loosing money as it is.

Latest attempt at getting airborne on battery power.

I would hope price would be the difference between this and an electric mosquito. If they can make it affordable surely they would sell. If you wanted to fly just above the ground this would be ideal, any higher, perhaps not. It's certainly an exciting development, way better than any other...

    Scorpion collective issue

I've heard comments about tethers and ground anchors causing accidents, I can understand if an anchor pulled out the ground how that would obviously cause an accident but if that situation could be avoided then surely they would be safe? I was planning a test with my project with four ground...

    Scorpion collective issue

Doug made a good observation in saying the collective looks to have a spring return. That would explain a lot and would be total madness if that't the case. Not sure where his post has gone now though.

    Scorpion collective issue

Yes the video isn't great. I noticed he is raising the collective uncomfortably high then as it starts to lift he is dropping the collective fast but the helicopter doesn't react fast to his input. Would Aft blade CG cause this? or a improperly reflexed trailing edge? I think the ground anchors...

    Scorpion collective issue

Just wondering how many things can cause this issue of collective going to full like that.

El Mirage ...lakebed - in the news here!

Thanks for explanation that makes sense now. I suppose the pitch change is the same as a helicopter going from powered flight to auto.

El Mirage ...lakebed - in the news here!

Good explanations. I'm confused about the prop vs sail part. At the start of the video it says that a tracking sail spinning about an axis is how you can go faster than the wind. So they built a two bladed spinning sail but said it's the same as a prop. However in the video he says the wheels...

El Mirage ...lakebed - in the news here!

So if they mounted the tell-tale at the same height as the prop it might not have indicated a speed higher than the wind ?
