New design of throttle-brake lever for my M16

I love my Magni M16 in every way, but there is one thing I don't like: its ridiculous parking brake. Speaking with more owners, they all agree.
So I decided to design a new lever in solidworks, and I printed it with my 3d printer.

I have used a material called ASA (a type of ABS), a material widely used in automotive industry, very resistant and withstands UV and weathering very well.
The next step is to mount it and try it.
Any suggestions and advices are welcome

If that works, just get a DXF file and get them cut on laser locally
 
Curious how flexible the ASA is and if the ratchet lock (the little crescent piece) stays coplanar with the teeth when force is applied. I am unfamiliar with this material but my first thought would be with the side-mounted handle grips the two parts might tend to twist in opposite directions when gripping force is applied. How rigid is ASA?

Nice job on the knurling by the way. What kind of 3D printer do you have? I'm envious :)
 
ASA is a very resistant material, and with a certain degree of flexibility. I think it could work. Anyways it is best to try ...
If I see it has not enough rigidity, I will use these pieces as prototypes, and I will have them manufactured in laser cut aluminum as suggested by fara.
My 3d-printer is a Creality Ender.

Yesterday I tested the prototype in flight. It worked perfectly. It is true that I would like it to be more rigid, especially when you brake hard. I will reprint it reinforced with carbon fiber and try again. If anyone is interested in this topic feel free to contact me. I have no problem sharing stl or dxf files.
 
If it flexes too much, you can split the handle in the middle and make it a "T" handle on both the throttle and brake. That way the pressures are evened out across the handle.
 
I personally don't find the Magni parking brake "ridiculous". However, I have noticed that some folks have not assembled their parking-brake catch correctly – which does, in fact, make it much harder to operate...

I think it's a really big mistake that you can't operate it with one hand, so you can't use it while prerrotating, or makes magnetos test more difficult.
Please tell us how the catch must be correctly assembled. Perhaps mine is wrong.
 
It's true you need to briefly use your right hand to set it (e.g. before a mag check), but you should be able to release it with just your left hand. I'll take some pics next time I'm with my gyro. As far as pre-rotating goes, my left hand is always on the throttle at that point, of course, so it's operating the brake (and not needing the parking brake) at the same time... I don't see the issue.
 
When I bought my M-22 early last summer, it did not have the parking brake lever on the brake. So I asked Greg Gremminger to order one and install it for me which he did. Setting it prior to checking the mags, does require two hands briefly, as noted, but that seems a minor inconvenience. The only other time I use it is when I actually park it before climbing out. Having said that, the notched catch with the release lever that is shown above is a beautiful design improvement and one I would love to purchase and install on my aircraft!

No. The operation is identical to an ELA or MTOSport (in fact it is a copy). But with one hand you can apply or remove the brake very easily.
 
I'd be interested in the files to print this and play with it. Can I get the .stl file (s)?
 
So very nice to see the innovation, bringing of new skills and tech, co-operation, and sharing here. Really brings home the community spirit possible through a Forum and community like this.👍
 
Sorry it's taken so long to get back to this - I've been working with a friend who's a fair distance away who has a printer.

First of all, he printed the throttle parts in PLA, and I played with them and we agreed it wasn't strong enough.

He then printed them in ASA, and printed T pieces that have an M8 allen bolt through them (to a nyloc nut) for the handles. There were a couple of iterations of the handle before I was happy enough to use it. I got this installed, then realised that the cable clamp on the Magni brake lever wouldn't work, so I took it back off while I made up a clamp (drilled a hole through an M6 allen bolt, basically, but it's stainless steel, so I had to go and get a cobalt drill after screwing up the titanium coated ones I usually use). Once I had all that, I tried installing it again last night.

Sadly I think there's too much flex in it, based on the amount of force I'm applying (it's a lever, after all), and I wasn't confident that I wouldn't break it. We're currently thinking about some of the carbon infused filament - has anybody used this?

I did think I might be able to tighten all the bolts up, but I'd be concerned about doing that to the point where nothing actually turns any more :(
