The 'MISSFIT' gyro, GRAND CHAMPION, Bensen Days 2010
Total Flight Time
700 F/W, 227 Gyro
I flew the 'Missfit' for another 85 minutes this afternoon. I have surpassed the 150 hour mark with only a couple of minor problems. I covered most of our county, from north over the beach, west over my house, then south over the Saint John's river, back to the hangar at Valkaria. I saw manatees, a shark, a spectacular brunette, a spotted stingray, an osprey, a 72 challenger in someones backyard, and a really big hog that had spots like a dalmation.
I waved so many times my arm got tired. Kids seem to really like the 'Missfit'.
I try to take my feet off the pedals now and then, noting the position they default to, and then try to hold them there. I tend to ride right foot heavy.
Night before last, I added some new tunes to my I-Pod, so I was enjoying some killer tunes from Jimmy Thackery, Mike Welch, and Tab Benoit, some bluesy rock. If you guys haven't flown with tunes yet, WOW!, what a new dimension. With in-flight adjustable trim, I goof around flying with my arms outstretched like a bird. I can steer the gyro very slowly by how I position my hands. With the recent rain, the fields are bright green, and seem to accentuate my favorite part of the flight, the slalom. It is nirvanna, dodging the palm trees, picking my path at 60 mph, and 10 ft. agl, like a video game.
Although well rehearsed, I still get totally amped out during the slalom.
The moment the 582 SHUDDERS to a stop at the hangar, evrything goes into a boring, slow motion. I find myself driving the bomber WAY too fast on the way home for some reason. Todays flight used 7 gallons, $32.74. Oh and,
$6.00 of 2 smoke oil. So $40.00 for a ride in AN INCREDIBLE AIRCRAFT.

Hey Mike,

What do you fly?..seems you always have a great time with your gyro!!..I'd like to come up to Valkaria sometime to see you guys.

Noe

Hey Noe, I fly a bare bones open gyro I twisted up myself. Years of study paid off, cause this bitch is spot on, in every regard. 582, Ivo, 23Dragon's, gas prerotate, 10gals,
hauls ass. Come to Valkaria, 3rd. Sat. we have a pancake brkfst. Check it out. Later.

It never stops being a blast Mike. Just enjoy.

Nah, I can't swing the 11 hundred beans... I snagged a wallymart elcheapo I-Pod shuffle
(I think) it's about an inch square by 1/4 inch thick. About $40. I bought some 'bass' earbuds from Sears, and thats it. I poke em in, and put my headset on, crank it up,
and it's another world. The music enhances the experience to such a higher level that you really must experience it to understand. I turn off the tunes on departure, and approach, for radio comm.

Damn I need to get down there and enjoy a day with you guys :) Love your enthusiasm I am coming soon to fly with ya :)

Brian, that was a textbook approach/landing you did in your bird dude. Thank your wife for me on the excellent camera work. I continue to explore the limits of the 'Missfit'.
It does everything I have asked of it so far. Wait till your hot rod is flyin, you will see.

Thanks bro, nice and simple solution since I don't fly with a headset!

Oh I do Mike, I certainly do. It is such a huge joy.

I thought your machine was a little gem from the first time I saw her, and that was before I found out about her 'stick'. She is certainly one little honey of a bird, and you obviously set her up right. Brian's wife was certainly impressed with your 'No hands...did you see that!!!' flypast.

Nice vid Brian, congratulate your wife, and I loved the background track too. One of these days I'll learn how to do that and put some music on some of my vids. Last one of mine is just an awful sound of wind all the time.

Mike- Your gyro is simply a work of art. Never sell her if youu can avoid it. That machine is a piece of you and stands out in my mind as one of my favorites. But, what makes this a "perfect storm" so to speak is having built such an elegant machine, then truly loving the moments of ecstacy it gives you back. Your passion for flying and conveying it here in words is at Vances level. I experience the same euphoric feelings each flight, but can't get it into words like you and Vance can. The best I can do is say how I am so charged from flying my helicopter, that I still feel it a week later. I absolutely LOVE flying my helo, just like you do. You say it so much more eloquently though. Keep up the wonderful flight reporrts, and I am so happy for you. You truly deserve your euphoria your beautiful gyro/Mike combo that is a "Perfect Storm" of adrenalin. Stan

Leigh, thank you so much, I am very happy with my girl. The control stick has some history behind it, it's origin from the space program.

Stan, compliments from you are held in the highest of regards, as your workmanship is legendary. Don't sell your poetic ability short, I recall many enjoyable post's of yours.
The biggest challenge I face each time I fly is controlling my personality. The gyro is so incredibly capable, that I have to really try NOT to totally go nuts jockeying the stick. I find myself looking over my shoulder expecting to see the sheriff helicopter on my tail.
