Helicycle-- Hoverings & Happenings

Back burning kerosene

Back burning kerosene

My work horse was chomping at the bit waiting for me to get back from Bensen Days.

Heres a video that took two attempts and 6 hours of uploading time. I was reminded why I dont post many videos!

Heres the video. I included the turbine startup. You can hear a clicking sound. That is high voltage arcing inside my burner can just waiting for the fuel to come in. I push that button first...then the starter button. A few seconds of winding up the turbine...and you can hear a whoommpppfff inside the burner can. The inferno is lit and now I shut the voltage off to the main fuel solenoid....and in comes the fuel through 6 lines into the burner can and the inferno really is getting serious now. The governor takes over around 45000 rpm. I then engage the rotors....checking all my gauges, idiot lights, and once the clutch light comes on showing full engagement...I roll the throttle up to flight rpm 61,500 rpm. Its soon hover time as you can see not much time elapses from startup to hover.

I then just flew around. There was a stiff northerly wind and I thought it would be a good day to hover with my nose pointed at that big oak tree while I did a 360 around it. On a calm day these are a piece of cake...but even with the wind I was happy with the tail rotor authority I had.

I then did a steep approach into a confined area....came to a hover and then hovered to the south end...and set down. Then I was set up for doing a max performance takeoff out of that confined hole.

I have more videos whenever I have time to upload them.

Cool! Now you have had some smudge at the left lower corner of the camera an it made it almost not enjoyable ....... getting sloppy there..... LOL. Thanks for posting.

Gabor- Sorry about that debris on my lense. Unfortunately I made 3 more videos that all have that before I cleaned it off. I guess a good helocopter pilot, or is that helicopter pilot?, would have included his camera in the preflight. Stan

Gabor- Here is another video with that annoying debris on the lense.

I was out checking all my systems. Everything is just running like it should.

Way to enjoy your toy!!!!!!!!!

Thanks for sharing... I could almost smell the JET A!

Heres a short video of a long cross country flight to my dads farm about 1/4 mile away. Just a good excuse to do a steep approach over the trees, this side and to the right of the grain bins. Reason for the mission? Because there was a place I have played as a child on the ground never realizing that I would come in from the sky someday and land there simply because I can now!

Gabor....only one more video after this one with than annoying debris on the lense.

Thank you it is really annoying. Does that Helocycle require a helocopter license to fly it?

Gabor- No license required except to send in the box tops off of 10 Cheerio cereal boxes.

Heres the last annoying debris on the lenses video.

I will shoot a fresh one someday, but I am leaving the camera off.

Stan

Gabor- I still respect you even though you are a helocopter pilot. I went thru the Wings program and thats how I was able to obtain my helicopter rating by having a choice of either 10 Cheerio boxtops...or 7 Frosted Flakes. I just didnt like the sound of "flakes". I wanted to be like you and proudly own a bumber sticker that says "Real Men fly Helocopters.

Stan thanks for posting your videos.

It is great to be able to fly 1st thing in the morning with you!!!

My daughter brought our 3 year old grandson Colton and 6 month granddaughter Ava up to the house today. Nothing like an excuse for a "private" airshow for the grandkids. I lit the inferno inside the turbine and after a lengthy almost 0.7 mile flight...I arrived at the back door.

There was Colton about to pee his pants with excitement...and my daughter Jennifer was holding Ava. That reminded me when I flew the R22 to my stairshop while doing my solo time. Jenny was there with Colton in her arms when Colton was at 6 months of age. He was kicking to be let out like a bull out of Chute 2. He was severely affected and for almost 2 years...had nothing on his mind but helicopters. He has more toy helicopters than I have clamps! Constantly holding them over his head and making helicopter noises with his lips. Precious precious memories I will never forget. I backed off on the helicopters and he is also into race cars, basketball, and all the other things that round little kids out.

I dont think Ava was quite so affected. I called home and Jenny said she was kicking and squirming...but it was for a bottle of moms milk!

Grandkids.....got to love them. They are the best thing I ever had anything to do with.

Thanks for the pictures and videos Stan. Would you mind if I used a couple of your pictures as templates for trying different color schemes? My frame is also white and I thought I might ask Gabor if he'd work some photoshop magic to help me see what my Helicycle would look like with different colors I'm considering.

Mike

Mike- Use any picture you want. Gabor is da man when it comes to helicopters and photoshopping, and building gyros, and having a herom of women and about everything else he gets into. I have never seen anyone like him. Stan

Angler- I am using a Sony Cybershot. Its working out well for me. The only problem was figuring out a mount where it would not buffet from the wind. I also used to mount it on the side of the cabin where you could see the collective, cyclic movements, but the camera incorrectly made the helicopter look like it was vibrating. My skid mount shows how smooth it is. It just has the wind noise drowning out the soft whine of the turbine. I may try muffing the mike with foam. Mike- When I was figuring out my paint scheme, I printed an 8 X 10 side view of a Helicycle, and traced out all its frame and cabin lines. Then I made about 6 copies. I sat down one day at lunch grabbed one and started drawing some sweeping lines on it. I wasn't quite satisfied and grabbed a 2nd sheet. I sketched what I felt I wanted, looked at it and my gut said that's what I want. I didn't make anymore sketches. I am wanting to design a mean looking Solar T-62 decal of just the turbine. Putting a mean face on it with fire coming out the back. I would like to put a small decal on my governor box lid. Stan

Your smile says it all!!!!

Good pictures!

stan.. really like watching your videos.. i usually catch them on youtube before you post em here.. any chance we can see a different camera angle? i think it would be cool to see a shot towards you to see the cyclic in action..

thanks again for sharing..
