I'll be busy tomorrow, so I'll do it today:

A toast to those of that made it back and a salute to the enemy soldiers that gave their lives that we could.

Happy veteran's day to all who have served and may God watch over and protect those who are currently serving.

Ed,
It's toasting the enemy for dying instead of our soldiers dying. We've fought a lot more wars in the past that had soldiers from other armies.

I am enjoying a Veterans day salute and thinking of all the great Vietnam pilots I learned to fly with that kept me alive in later days, until that post.

Happy Veteran's Day! ?

Happy Veteran's Day! ?

Thanks to all the servicemen and women out there that have served our country... Especially those that served in time of war.

On a side note, I never understood the "Happy" part of "Happy Veteran's Day." It's not Valentine's Day, for god's sake. (Although both start with a "V")

On that note, I have a story:

November 11th, 2004, Balad, Iraq:

I was with the 185th Aviation Brigade (Mississippi Army National Guard), and the Brigade Commander and Brigade CSM held a Brigade Formation, on the tarmac (10,800 foot runway, 250 foot wide), in honor of Veteran's Day. The Brigade was over 2500 strong, with over 1500 in attendance.

It was windy (al sharia winds) - 25kts gusting to 40...no loudspeaker or PA system...My Battalion was at the far end.

Brigade Commander cups his hands to his mouth, and yells, "Happy Veteran's Day to all you new veterans!" Only the wind played a few tricks with what he said...

My battalion Commander, who is supposed to echo the call, does an about face, and is ready to echo the call. At this point, as I am the S-3, with the battalion staff at the front, I sense trouble, as the Battalion Commander has a look on his face that is confusion mixed with resignation...

He puts his hands to his mouth, and yells, "Happy Valentine's Day to all you new Veterans!!!"

I damned near fell out of the formation I was laughing so hard. Odd moment, and you had to be there.

By the way, my Battalion Commander was an awesome guy - but even awesome guys make goofs sometimes, and this was a rare one. Funny though, and it is a signature moment at our reunions.

On another note, that formation was held in honor of Vietnam Helicopter Pilots, and the sacrifices that those pilots made.

Indeed, the 185th had two full crews flying UH-60's (4 pilots, four crewchiefs/gunners) that were Vietnam veterans. It was a good day, and I was proud to be part of that unit.

So, Happy Veteran's Day! to all those old, and new, veterans.

:usa2:

PS - Missing Man formations are the most awe-inspiring things...they bring a tear to my eye every time...

PS-2: If any of you live near DC, you must go see the Changing of the Guard at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier...

PS-3: TAPS played at midnight is a chilling tribute to our fallen comrades.

Whoa ED, Where did that come from. The dishonorable rag head terrorists weren't refered to at all. He was showing the mutual respect true soldiers have for other soldiers that are serving their country. >> US, English, Russian, German, Japanese, North Vietnamese Regulars and just recently Iraqi Regulars. We are no longer fighting soldiers in Iraq but splinters of crime families with thier thugs.

I was enjoying a Veterans day salute and thinking of all the great Vietnam pilots I learned to fly with that kept me alive in later days, until that post.

I apologize, Dale.

I get very sensitive to what I perceive as congratulating our enemies. I completely misunderstood your post and now realize what you were saying isn't what I was understanding. That's sometimes the problem with email posts; you don't always get the correct comprehension of the post.

Happy Veteran's Day.

Happy Veteran's Day! :usa:

I have not served but my father did.

I think my father would have wanted me to say we should also thank our allies also, esp. Canada, England, France and Australia.

I made a small web site for my father here:

Ed, apology whole heartily accepted.
You are a noble vereran soldier and I have the greatest repect for you.
By the way, Thanks! I have been on the sidelines since I joining in MAY. You got a fire under me to finally say something.
Spencer, I love your November Valentines Day in the desert story. And you reminded me of the first Gulf War victory parade, they included two aircraft at the end to represent the Vietnam Vets that never had one. As Medevac backfill on the east coast, my unit provided the real aircraft and crews. It was great to see the pride in all our Vietnam crew members when they saw on TV those Hueys in trail.

First, that's a toast I learned in the 101st. The enemy soldier still deserves respect as a soldier. I never hated anyone I killed.

Second, Memorial Day is a day of mouring and rememberance. Veteran's Day is a day of celebration to honor the the living.

Third, my appologies to any one that misunderstood.

Fourth, as a true vetran, I'm now officially a "hog" rider! It's a faster-than-all-get-out Hog and it's water cooled. But, it still says H-D on the side. It's a red and black 06 VRSCD Night Rod. Handles like a dream. It has the most impeccable manners of any bike I've ever ridded. (We rode 4 other Harleys yesterday to be sure we really wanted the Night Rod.)

So, who has the addresses TimChick needs in the " 'Tis the Season..." thread?
