BENSEN DAYS 2021 is Happening!!!!!

Hmmmmm.......I have quite a bit of fixed wing experience but never in a Gyro. I planned to get some basic dual instruction in a Gyro and thought the NANO would be good to start with......or would you think there might be another type of ultralight Gyro that would be good in my case or do you think the Nano is as good as it gets for a starter Gyro? I appreciate your opinion. I'm sure there are other people that find your thoughts very valuable.

While the Nano is a great machine.....as with most ultralights.....they usually require a bit more finesse due to their light weight. With proper training....and not rushed training.....it can be a great machine.
‘My first gyro was a GyroBee and it was extremely stable and fun......it’s a personal choice.
Just don’t rush training.

Hmmm, have you ever flown in a gyro, even as just a passenger? If not, perhaps you could go up in a dual place, with someone experienced, and see how you like it before deciding on the one you might really want. I haven't flown the Nano, but it doesn't sound like the machine to be just starting in.

What part of PA are you in? I'll be doing some flying in eastern PA in the next few several months, if you want to fly with me a bit.

I was standing there with the yellow NANO and the red NANO was behind it and I heard him say it to someone.....and he has since replied that it was was tongue in cheek. He sais it took him five days. So since it was tongue in cheek it's obvious that he trailered it.

Tyger....good advice. I want to get with a CFI and get a flight in a dual Gyro. I'm in the South central part of PA....near Harrisburg. I would welcome a flight if you were in this section of the state. BTW....a Dominator was recommended but I need to check that out further but apparently? it is only available as a kit? Even though I was an A&P I would have been more interested in a complete gyro.

Come on down to our Fly In
May 14-17
Anson County Airport
Wadesboro, NC
I’ll give you some rides and there will be a lot of gyros there.

I appreciate the offer but the drive to Fla. was my big trip for quite a while. I would have taken the airlines but what a hassle....can hardly take anything and the restrictions etc.

The last time I looked on Barnstormers there was a single place Dominator for sale, lime green and very new, look under gyros on the Barnstormers website.

Cool, I used to do a fair amount of military training at Ft Indiantown Gap, if you know where that is.
In 2019 I actually spent the night in a trailer at a little grass airport called Baublitz, in Brogue, PA (near Red Lion). I was trying to get to Frederick, MD for a fly-in, but a line of thunderstorms was heading my way so I decided to land there. After the storms had passed, I discovered that water had got into my prerotator bendix, so I had to take it all apart to clean the now-sticky grease out of it. By the time that got done it was too late in the day to keep going.
Also, an old Army buddy of mine lives right near the York airport and I've been invited to fly down and visit him "any time".

Tyger....at one point in my life I was a crew chief on a CH-54 and we flew into Fort Indiantown Gap. I had 8 years working on Chinooks....OH-58s....OH-6s...U-8s....etc. Been on many test flights with basically former Vietnam helicopter pilots....and was an airline mech....and 4 years of jet engines in the AF before that. As a private pilot I flew into York airport once. This whole gyro thing is new to me. The places you mention are in my stomping grounds. I will be thinking about getting some dual time before I purchase a gyro......and saw that Chris Burgess was listed in Frederick? I saw he was listed as a CFI.......or I planned to contact an ultralight club in the York area and also Gettysburg and see if they have any gyro members.

My wife’s grandfather worked on jet engines for GE. Couldn’t hear anything in his later years. Hope you wore hearing protection... I’ll google OH-58 and the other helicopters you mentioned since not sure what they look like. I’m originally from PA and grandparents lived in York and Reading. You’ll have to go visit the Piper Cub factory in Lockhaven someday and check out the annual flyin there. Lots of great fly outs during the Cub event.

Found a photo of OH-58 - cool!

Dave......as a jet engine mech in the AIr Force they always stressed ear plugs and ear muffs. We used to run/test fighter aircraft on a trim pad and you wouldn't believe the effect of the noise in afterburner on the body. The noise intensity would actually cause noise sickness if it extended for a longer period of time. I remember years ago when my sister when to Lock Haven U. we would drive by the Piper plant when it was still operating and you would see Cubs etc. Then they moved the plant to Vero Beach Fla. Ch-54's were my favorite as a crew chief.....always trusted Sikorsky. I liked the OH-58's also. I spent a lot of time with the Chinooks and I didn't like them or trust them.....many transmissions...fore and aft...and a combining transmission and lots of drive shafting and hydraulics etc. etc. A lot of things to go wrong. As far as hearing is concerned I probably did more damage to my ears years ago shooting guns without ear protection and have some tinnitus. Young people today will probably suffer from blasting music in their ears. Cubs were good but I learned to fly in Aeroncas....tail draggers. 65HP and I would climb from 1000 ft. to 2000ft and it seemed to take forever. LOL

Chris,

You will love flying gyros if flew taildraggers! Gyros are much simpler than helos without all the transmissions. Get Tyger to fly down and give you a flight in his Magni. I prefer the open gyros since seems fewer accidents than enclosed. The fly outs at the Cub events are a blast. Not sure they would like gyros joining them. I use to run trap at local club, but decided it was to hard on hearing even with ear plugs. Can’t Imagine how loud jet engine would be with after burners on. Sounds like you have a great job. Barnstormers have lots of nice used gyros for sale now too. There is an AR-1 for sale in CA. Dave
