How do I make a larger posting that this forum software will accept?

When writing a longer text I have made a habit of doing so in my favourite editor and then copy and past it to the input area. Or the other way round when you're done writing and before hitting "Post Reply" hit ctrl + A and ctrl + C which copies your whole text to the clipboard. If you hit a forum snag you can copy it to an empty text file afterwards. This would also save all the links and the formatting you have in the text since a sort of ASCII based tag system is used in the forum like "
" etc. Ever since I found out how to retrieve old posts I found the other problems in the forum not too bad and by no means killer snags.

Maybe its not only the "size" of the post, but more the time it takes to do all the typing, linking, copying and pasting, Eh. By then, whenever that is, the HTTP session will have timed out, or some other limiting factor. By the way, what is the session timeout limit for the forum?
 
As Kolibri has suggested if you are trying to make a large, time consuming post it maybe best to create the bulk in a text editor then copy and paste the text to the forum in one go.

Also, I have noticed that when creating a post the forum "Auto-Saves" your entry about every minute, so it is saving your work. If you were to leave the thread before posting your reply, even shut down your browser, then return to the thread at a later time, you are presented with the option to "Restore" or "Discard" your previously entered content that was automatically saved.

I tested this with two browsers and even logged off the Internet for a couple of hours but when I returned to the thread my auto-saved post was still there ready for me to restore and continue.

So far I have not had any issues with session time-outs on this forum and I have dial-up service.

Despite the "length" of my previous post saving all that text as a notepad file shows it's only 88kb in size, so pretty small.

I've frequented the forum since it was the old, old forum, fifteen years or more. I noticed a sharp decrease in forum participation when people moved from building their own ships to buying the Eurotubs, so there's a lot less meat and potatoes being posted here.

Alan, please try saving that text in Rich Text Format, in a Word DOC, and in Open Office Writer; then tell us the size of your spam for those. Then add a link to an MP4 format video, an MPEG video, and an avi video, all with AAC sound, that reside on your hard drive. All of these are normally valid web formats.

Other forums can handle all of this, without a hic-up. You-Tube stuff is going to 720p and 1080p resolutions. My being the eutrophicated one means that I need all the resolution I can get. If you don't know what eutrophicated means, then you know how I feel, every time someone on this forum uses some aeronautical acronym that I never heard of. Maybe a Wiki page could be added here for us newbies. Maybe a FAQ page. Just a suggestion. Those who don't have to run off to some external documentation for what is discussed here might be feel encouraged to come back.

I can understand your frustration but don't expect anyone to post unless they have something to say, many are just checking the forum to see what's going on and that ain't much.

Maybe we need to start another thread about center-line-thrust, that horse has been beaten to death but it seems the best way to get people riled up into posting!
 
O.K. The Wikipedia blurb on eutrophication is wrong, probably written by some college boy, who never went fishing a day in his life. Eutrophication is a natural aging process for 'fresh-water' lakes and rivers. Almost all natural lakes(which of course excludes resevoirs) were created as a part of the ice age glaciation 11,000 years ago. As the glaciers grew and moved southward, they gouged out these lakes, usually down to bedrock. In some cases the glaciers grew in place, so thickly, that they compressed the ground, many times down to 130 feet. But those are special cases. Then as the ice age ended, the lakes were filled by the water that created them.

Left to themselves, the lakes aged, shifting from Oligotrophic, to Mesotrophic to Eutrophic as thousands of years passed. When the lakes were first formed they were gouged out of the bedrock of the Canadian Shield. There was practically no nutrients in the waters, and they couldn't sustain life; but over the millenia, the wind blew dust/dirt/leaves/insects and such into the waters, increasing their ability to grow aquatic vegetation, and, therefore, animal life. Sediments settled on lake bottoms. And as they 'aged' they progressed from supporting only fresh-water lake trout, ciscos and tulibees to supporting a over a dozen sport-fish species in each lake. Finally, as these lakes entered into the late eutrophic phase, the siltation used up so much of the oxygen in the water, that only a few species could live there any longer.

So, when my younger daughter told me one day that I was older than dirt, I thought, how appropriate. I have become eutrophicated, hence the moniker.
 
What the Wiki reference was referring to was that when farms, homes, subdivisions and industry are created around natural lakes, the aging process is accelerated tremendously, sometimes killing the life-sustaining ability in only 50 years. Even filling in the lakes completely.
 
So, I am the Eutrophicated1, these days moving much more slowly(but I still drive a stick-shift car)seeing a little more dimly(no longer 20x10) and hearing a little less; thus I need my headphone volume turned up, my videos a little brighter, and with higher resolution, etc.
