Hahahaha, looks like we got 7 Censorship Commie's on this forum.
    The pictures tell no lies
The debate about how blades break has no negative over tone.
I see no mess, please reiterate on mess and the negativity ?
Kolibri, myself and others have the RIGHT to debate, agree and disagree with accusations not founded.
If being AWARE is negativity, then, we are in some deep mud !!!
And by the way: Soft blade don't break as fast as stiff blades on impact !!!! :)

Well put, thanks, for that. I live with the same philosophy.

The buckling seems to be consistently at the end of the tapered mast join, above which is the single 2" square tube.

        • So, Kolibri, WHEN they buckled that’s where they buckled. Can you help me understand the significance/value of knowing this? Where SHOULD they buckle or is this the ideal place?

          Thanks for clarifying.

No. According to some folks here, there is no reason to know this.
Others may believe otherwise, so the montage is for them.

For example, the unnamed fellow who bent his AG mast during vigorous flying.
He may be curious if the bend location was the same.

Why are you against censorship and commies? You must not like our President because he loves both censorship and Russians. That means you are not patriotic. Are you also against the military and the flag?

If you think the previous sentence was stupid then you must not like the daily news and what's coming out of the White House online or on Twitter every day.

              • Russians are no longer synonymous with being Communists.
That still leaves the Clintons . . .

Anybody know a good website with good info about gyros? ;)

Nah - I'm no way smart enough, energetic enough, or patient enough to do that. Was just hoping...
Besides, I've seen way too many chats devolve into politics and either actually or functionally die. I thought this chat didn't allow politics - my bad. Oddly, I'm not aware of any political chats (which, admittedly, I don't visit) which have gone off the tracks because of gyro/aviation conversations!

For the record, I'm a Christian, Republican who served 24 years Active Duty Air Force, including 7 years in Europe where I saw first-hand the horrible cost of populism from two World Wars and saw how easy it was for a demagogue to get a whole nation of "Christians" to start killing a race of people. Anyone who thinks those were isolated, never-to-be-repeated incidents is fooling themselves, IMHO (there's a whole floor in the German History Museum in Berlin that's incredibly sobering in that regard).

You asked Piot135PD if he has served. You may wanna take a look at "About" on his profile.

Perhaps you wouldn't mind defining populism for me; I thought it was National Socialists that did their best to wipe out christianity and get some people in their nation to start killing a religious group of people.

                              Geoff

First, we’re getting WAAY off topic, though this thread continues to be filled with details of questionable relevance even for gyros (why DOES it matter where a mast bends when the forces of a crash were strong enough to bend it and where SHOULD it bend?).

Second, there is a fine line between commenting on history and launching into political debate. I may well have crossed that line with my comments but that wasn’t my intent; I was passing along some past learnings while stationed abroad.

If you’re truly interested in this, you may consider searching on the Völkisch Movement as well as the German Christians (Deutsche Christen) associated with Ludwig Muller. I think you’ll quickly see a very small part of what I saw and learned about while stationed in Germany.

And if you get the chance, watch “The Wave” (“Die Welle”), a 2008 German movie actually based on a high school teacher’s experiment in California in the ‘60’s. We got it on Netflix DVD.

Wikipedia is a decent although not an authoritative quick source for more info about all of these, if that helps.

                              • Thoughts on this thread. Since our sport is dangerous the subject of this thread is certainly of interest to me. Involved in aviation since birth, the first 14 years involuntarily, my father was a pilot, I then went into the Air Training Cadets, began a PPL at 16 and have flown ever since in various fields of aviation.

Came to gyro late but found it hugely rewarding, very fascinating, but... unfortunately have lost more friends and people I have known personally in the short time I have been gyro flying, than any other sport or activity that I have participated in.

This does not put me off, rather than encourage me to be very interested in whatever reason, or reasons, that have caused this sad statistic, and what factors can possibly mitigate fatalities.

I am at this time visiting a close friend in hospital who unfortunately was involved in an incident/accident a few days ago in a gyro. I am delighted to report that he is recovering well, the pilot was unhurt except for bruising from the harness.

The accident occurred very shortly after lift off and it is certainly in my mind that when the gyro impacted in a right banking dive some of the forces that both pilots were subsequently subjected to may well have been lessened by the impact and bending of rotors, possible deformation of the mast, and crumpling of the fuselage.

It was therefor the subject of damage to gyro rotor systems that in this case caught my attention and I think a subject of interest to all of us who fly them.

I appreciate the effort of Kolibri to explore the subject, collate information and present it, and the input of those whose knowledge and experience in the field helps us understand any form of possible lessening of the consequences when thing go wrong.
                                Leigh.
