Working on Gyroplane. Continental A65

http://www.fokkervliegen.nl/Sercice%...rcraft%20Magne.pdf
Link is for a manual for the Bendix SF4 series magneto. It indicates that the -8 magneto does not have an impulse coupling to assist in starting.

I am perplexed that you can hook a battery up to the magneto for ignition retard as this manual does not show this.

If I am correct and the engine magneto's have not been off the engine and the ignition leads are on the correct plugs, then magneto should fire. Without the coupling it will take a smart pull on the propeller for the magneto to spark.

Here are the new pics had to format SDCARD in laptop then back in phone and reformat seems to be working great now.
Here are the pics.
took all pics even clean the Mag tags the mag that is made for running not starting is not a Bendix its a CASE.

looks to be SF4RN-8

Who moved my topic I had posted this in Engines?

Is it the Case magneto that has provision for the nine volt battery?

What is it's part and model number?

No The Bendix has the power for the battery looks at new pics you can see grommet with wire connection.

The Case Mag has no serial number on it I look on sides and under and all over on CASE on top.

Tomorrow is the Day I will start this thing of have a heart attack trying to start it!
all my test say that this engine should start so it will start if I can turn the 52" prop
fast enough and prime it perfect.

is it possible I have straight mags and not impulse mages?

The case magneto looks like a J I Case 4-CAMA.

Reference this e-bay link. https://www.ebay.com/itm/J-I-Case-4...195274?hash=item4d6ec9b78a:g:qQ4AAOSwRE5acpnW

If you look at the link for Bendix magneto its shows the -8 magneto too not be be impulse coupling, but someone may added one anyway.

If either of the two magneto's have a working impulse coupling, i do not think you do, you will here a click from the magneto as you pull the propeller through top dead center.

Is the nine volt battery wire tied into the p-lead of the Bendix magneto?

If it is I can kinda see what they were doing, but I would think once the magneto is working on its own it would overcharge the nine volt battery.

after the engine is started I have a switch and I must turn off starting mag Bendix and turn on CASE running mag.
it's not impulse coupling.

Almost 3 hours now I'm dead my shoulders are killing me and my elbows hurt.
all I got was a few sputers. 5 of them.
I try start it with all king of priming from one to four.
I took impulse plugs off and I have spark on all 4 a nice blue spark.
I'm sure I'm the problem and I'm not strong enough to start it. I can't spin it fast enough to make it start with this link of impulse mag.

She can be cantankerous. The Stromberg carburetors do not have an accelerator pump, when opening the throttle on a cold engine it will lean and die. For cold starts I always keep the primer ready with a charge of gasoline so when it starts to die I add the primer and grab another one just in case. When it is warm and can idle on its own, I add the primer slowly and lock the primer.

Small diameter propellers do not help as they do not have as much flywheel effect.

It does not start just small ignition type sputers but I'm sure I'm not able to turn it fast for it to start and don't forget this is like 3 feet off the ground so it's not like I can really get all my arm power in it.
anyway I'm giving up for today.
Got a way to very fire if my plug wires are at right place?

Frank: Regarding the video.

No question that she flies (well, she FLEW). However, that brief sequence shows a low pass and a very gradual climb. You can cue up any of a score of online videos of gyros, in which that same low pass would be followed by a steep climb and a 90--degree or more banked reversal turn -- all while still climbing. Gyros can be wildly maneuverable -- or less so. Ideally the static thrust-to-weight ratio ought to be 1:2 or more.

Yes, you can fly with less, if you are patient, careful and conservative and don't want to toss her around. Much like driving the old aircooled VW bus.

You can pull all the plug wires so it can not run. Pull your choice top or bottom plugs. Pick a cylinder, pull the prop through finding the compression stroke. As the piston is coming to the top of the stroke, the wire from the magneto that you have sparking for that cylinder should spark. You can do the same for the other cylinders.

You will know if the engine is flooded when you see fuel dropping on the ground. If you do flood it, ignition off, full throttle and rotate the engine backwards six to eight blades. Close throttle and start sequence again.

It will typically start better with the throttle at full closed position. This will give you some choking effect.

Might try giving it two to three shots of prime, pull it through a couple of blades and give it two to three more shots of prime before making it hot and trying to start. If it just sputters give it two more shots of prime and retry.

Above all else, treat the propeller with the utmost respect. Anytime you are touching it, stay out of the arc of the propeller. It will hurt you, if you give it a chance.

I will look online I find engine firing order not I need too look for cylinder location after on the mags I will look for firing order on that,
I think maybe 2 wires are out of place.

1324 is firing order..

Continental engines, number one cylinder, right rear. Number two left rear, number three right front, number four left front. Cylinder numbers will be cast beside the upper cylinder side.

On the Bendix magneto the manual I posted a link is a little different from what I am use to. The marked 1 goes cylinder one. The one marked two goes the second cylinder to fire - number three. The third wire goes to cylinder two and the wire marked four goes to cylinder four.

I am not sure on the case magneto.

So I got help and I have all the information I needed to make sure my mags are good and the firering order on them are good.
Thanks for emailing me the pdf it will help me.

Now all I need is some free time
