  • Fuel pump and promising a Mac

Tank was empty put 3 gals in. Primed carb three times, started three times, but died three times. What am I doing wrong?

started three times, but died three times.
Started and ran for a length of time, how long?
Or would just pop and sputter a couple of times?

If it just popped and sputtered a couple of revolutions. Then I would suggest there is insufficient compression.
Don't argue, and just try this.
remove the sparkplugs and squirt a liberal amount of motor oil (10W30, 10W40, 30W) into each cylinder, near the top of the piston/wall area. You are trying to coat the cylinder walls and get the oil between the piston rings. Pull the propeller through a couple of revolutions to coat the walls and rings. This wet seal will raise the compression available and it will be just enough to fire the engine up. Reinsert the sparkplugs.
This is normally used on a new rebuild, where the rings have not take a set yet.

If it popped and sputtered for a couple of revs, it could also be a sign of a weak magneto. Mine would do that until I replaced the mag with one of Rick's CDI units.

Do those engines have a fuel bowl w/needle & seat?
On my old 2stroke boat motor, have to remove the bowl and move float up&down so more fuel can get by. Otherwise it just pops & dies.
