Default Man in motorized parachute stuck 8 hours in power lines

Man in motorized parachute stuck 8 hours in power lines near Cincinnati
Associated Press, Thursday, September 21, 2006

LOVELAND, Ohio — The pilot of a motorized parachute was caught in power lines about 150 feet high for about eight hours overnight as rescuers tried to free him, the State Highway Patrol said.

The pilot, Michael Farrell, 52, of Loveland, was not injured in the crash, which happened around 7:30 p.m., the patrol said.

The aircraft was wrapped around two static lines, which are strung higher than live wires and do not transmit electricity, said Steve Brash, a Duke Energy spokesman. The company cut off electricity to the other power lines, which the pilot did not touch, and no customers lost service, Brash said.

Workers from the company used three cranes to get the pilot down, said Trooper John Thorne of the patrol's Batavia post. The largest crane held the craft in place while the smaller two were used to free him.

Rescue workers had difficulty using a crane earlier because it wasn't tall enough, said Martha Woodruff, a patrol dispatcher. She said Farrell's wife was at the scene and communicating with him using walkie-talkies.

The aircraft consists of a parachute attached to a metal frame with a seat inside and what looks like a large fan in the back.

The accident happened just outside Loveland, 15 miles east of Cincinnati.

The media has so far called it an ultralight airplane and a paraglider.

The guy just bought it, I wonder how many lessons he had.

Yeap, execept he HIT a powerline. Apparently he did not get stuck. I think it was a local telephone-wood pole kind of thing rather than one of these large x-country lines.

Tim, we know he got at least one GOOD lesson! Let's see if he learned anything from it.

Ha! Yes and a very expensive lession.

I hope that he gets lessons if he did not have any and if he did I hope that someday he starts flying again.

It can be hard to get back on a horse that the media covered you falling off of.

They actually give lessons to fly those? I guess they must teach you how to stay out of power lines...

Couple years ago I saw one almost get tangled in the lines.

When they get in the wind and the wind is pushing em towards the lines it's inevitable.

The nut-case that I saw actually had the lines going across the front of his property so he was well aware of their location.

Some people should never have aircraft at any expence.
