Hi all,
It's Christmas time at the Stevens household. My 23 foot Dragon Wings arrived today and I'm going through the box. All appears to be there and I can't wait to try em out! I did insert the Rotor Bar into the head and put my teeter bolt through the last hole (This was the hole that was used). Seems to have alot of "Range of Motion." Does anyone know off hand which hole on the Rotor Bar you should use with a standard Brock Head? Thanks, John-

Check the amount of teeter. It should teeter about 9 or 10 degrees maximum each way (18 to 20 degrees total stop to syop). More or less could cause real problems.

Hi John,
I just spoke to my dad he said the bottom hole is set to Bensen standard. My guess is a KB head is an exact duplicate of a Bensen so that should do. |

Thanks Mike and Ken.
I think I have earned the title "Idiot" and should probably suffer all of the ranting and rage of Ken J. and Chuck E. After posting my question, I went back to the shop and mounted the rotor bar to the head only to find that the bottom hole is the only one that will line up for the teeter bolt. No other hole will do. Therefore, I am, in fact, and idiot. Mike your Dad made it idiot proof. I'm the proof. John-

John, I no longer rant and rage.....maybe a little subtle sarcasm, but that's all. After knocking off the top of my tail and chewing up my prop, who am I to be ranting at anyone?

Scott, I've been flying the last few weeks. I got insurance through Falcon and opted for coverage for the 2nd seat........almost 2K.....
I've been rearranging some instruments, eliminating a battery-sucking clock and getting another VDO tach for my 2nd ignition instead of the Pep Boys one. I also installed one of those light-bar voltmeters, but I don't really care for it. Too hard to see in the sunlight. But I'll leave it on my panel and I just installed a regular one over on the other side. The new tach will be going in the panel instead of hanging underneath. I'm also switching to a fuel metering system for my FI. I had a distribution block, but I'd get stalling out on steep, idle landings. I could have lowered the block, but popped for the Bendix-style meter seeing as I would have had to make new S.S. fuel lines anyway. The meter can be mounted anywhere in any position. A hangar neighbor is soldering the tips on the lines for me and they should be ready on Wednesday morning. I'll probably be adding another throttle and am looking into getting the cams out to send in for a re-grind for a few more ponies.

Ken , hope you can get up to Corona soon, if not maybe meet at French Valley? Just finishing up on my annual this week, the job has kept me very busy, and hope to be airborne by the weekend. Glad you finally found insurance, what a pain in California.

Ken,
What's up with the kinder, gentler, more Politicaly Correct attitude? I miss you, and I deserve a good KenSandyEggo chewing. Everybody respects you for being who you are. I have even seen dedicaded posts wonder where you went. I remember a time, not too long ago, logging on to find the carcas of another victim of KenSandyEggo. What gives? Since you left the forums I had no choice but to name GyroRon "My Hero." Imagine my disappointment. I am so glad you have returned to us, please don't make me be sad that you've turned in you sharp tonge (Fingers) for a pair of glass slippers. For some reason, I've always wanted to relax in my favorite chair with a bag of "low-fat" chips and read you and Chuck E. go at it on a heated subject. Reading some of your posts have been funnier than watching "Who's Line!" John-

Screw,
Could you weigh your blades and hub bar and let me know? We have had to get a local manufacturer to bring his Composite glass blades down in weight to suit the design considerations for the Butterfly/Monarchs here in OZ. At this time we are still about 10-12lbs above our target. Also, John how long is the hub bar you are using on the 23' disc? Appreciate any info Gents. Thanks. Mitch

John, overall the stress got to me. Not just from the online bantering, but my medical problems (all O.K. now), my step-son's huge medical and mental problems, going to school full-time mostly with people in their 20s, whose memories are a lot sharper than mine is now, and so forth. I'm just trying to keep my life calmer now. My blood pressure had gone up a bit and I want to get it lower (I'm working on it). I'll still give a little bite now and then, but in a way that doesn't get my bodily fluids percolating. I'VE EXPLAINED THIS AT LEAST 10 TIMES!!! NOW DO YOU UNDERSTAND, YOU BLOOMING IDIOT!!!??? Ha-ha. Just reminding you of the old days.

To Greg Mitchell in Oz:
I have a set of 23' Dragon Wings and a set of 25' Sport Rotors that I just weighed on a household bathroom scale. These DW's have a 1' hub bar, and with the blades straps attached it comes to 8#. Each 11' DW blade comes to 17#, for a total of 42# for 23'. I also have a set of 24' DW's. They have a 2' hub bar, with 11' blades. Someone posted that Ernie doesn't make 2' hub bars any more, and someone else said that he still does...Is that true Mike B. or Ernie B.? I believe that John Landry wrote either here or on the old Rotorcraft Conference that his set of 22's weigh 37#. Is that correct, John? The Sport Rotors hub bar with blade straps attached and blade bolts in place came in at 12#, measuring 23 7/8" in length. The blades are 11 1/2' at 20# each, for a total of 52#. Hope this helps, Greg. What are your Oz built composite blades weighing at? G'day, mate! |

Hey Kevin,
Thankyou for the detailed response, very helpful. Went back to a diary entry of March last year to read that I'd seen them listed as 22' @ 36lbs and under AC site @ 39lbs. So the 23's @ 42lbs is good to know. Larry Neal, gave me a target of 43-45lbs, Larry prototyped the Butterfly 503 with Benson Blades 21'9". I have a set and weighed mine today. 42.9lbs. Rob Patroney of Revolution Rotor Blades produces a Top Shelf product at an affordable price. Rob arguably, knows more than most about composite rotor blade manufacturing and he is a keen developer of his own innovative theories. Also, Rob was keen to be involved with this project. Target set at 45lbs, maybe go to 47-48lbs. Kevin the blades are 23' 2" disk, 14" hub bar, 11' blades. I have two sets of numbers but will split the difference. 26.35kg (57.97lbs) So 58lbs. This puts the weight at 16lbs above DW of same disk size and 6lbs above SportCopters. Larry is still right in the zone with the DW's for weight. I think 16lbs changes thrustline and CogG relationships?? In this case the CofG is raised further and if a craft has a 2" low offset, this would increase the offset but would it then require having to tweak other parts of the design to compensate?? A stone is a fair amount of weight. Thanks again Kev. Mitch.
