Default New Workshop/Hanger for Sparrowhawk Construction

We are building the workshop and hanger next to our house for my yet-to-be purchased Sparrowhawk kit. The workshop will be 30' wide and 50' deep, with cable tv and Internet. The side walls will be 10' tall; scissor trusses used down the long direction, and the front door will be 14' tall and 12' wide. Any suggestions will be welcome.
Thanks,
Heather

Oh Brother!! That's almost larger than my house?!

Have at it Heather...keep us posted via pictures, OK?

Sounds like you're at a fly-in ranch?!

Cheers

Harry,
We don't live at a fly-in ranch, just a house in the woods.
Paul,
The roof will have 4 skylights per side, for a total of 8. Between the skylights on each side will be 3 4' windows, with a window in the front and back. My husband has all kinds of plans to fill up the space, but I have negotiated room for the Sparrowhawk.
Newcomers,
I don't think that this is the average space needed to build a Sparrowhawk.
Heather

Hi Heather

Great news about your house and shop, would only make one suggestion from past experience, be sure to make some part of the shop strong enough to use a hoist for any lifting that you will encounter with your projects.

Tony,
Excellent idea, and I had that topic covered. The beam over the big garage door was designed to hold an extra ton.
thanks,
Heather

Harry,
the shack where I live alone (with my animals) in the middle of my pasture beside a lake is only 20'x40' but I love it. Ernie and Connie liked it too.

Heather,
I put solar heating coils in my concrete floor and it is real nice in the winter.

Default Bigger is better

Always build any shop as big as you can go even if it means taking longer to finish. Shop space gets used up real quick for stuff that usually dont even belong in the workspace. 10' ceilings are nice but if you put the hawk on a trailer the rotorhead will hit a 10' limmit. I have 12' door and 14' ceilings and with the gyro on the trailer the rotor head only has a few inches to spare with the door opening.

Jonathan, I disagree. I built my hangar for a purpose -- to hold two gyrocopters! No bigger, so I could air condition it and heat it without waste.

It now has THREE gyros in it so I guess I oversized it a little but it's nice to have it cool and warm.

Heather, be sure to rethink wall height. Here is my 32 by 54 by 12 high and you can see the gyro already just about up to the crane. I have 16 feet at the peak.

Phil,
I just checked the drawings, and the ceiling is 17 feet at the inside peak.
thanks,
Heather

I would have to measure but I dont think you will be able to park your gyro very close to the wall if its 10 ft. Just something to think about. Also dont forget the lights will hang down from your ceiling some.
