I think I saw the year of mfg. on my engine before I installed it. Now I can't find it.
Did I imagine this or is it now hidden? .

Harry, it's on a part we don't normally use, a part of the transmission. The numbers on the engine won't tell you the year.

Harry,
I have been trying to get your question answered for myself for some time. It's like sime kind of voodo. People will tell you that things change through the years such as the color of the plastic parts, wires on the harness, cams, rockers...thermo cap and so on but no one has so far as I can find made a list of the changes through the years to help you identify what engine you have if you don't have the transmission. I have 3 EJ-22's and they each have differn't rockers, wireing harness, plastic parts, sensor shapes, and other changes but I can find no information on how to relate these things to years. Good luck. Let me know if you find anything.

Tim,
If the engines have the EFI harness you can tell approximately what year they are by the connectors on the engine harness. 1990 and 1991 have three major connectors--a 14 pin, a 16 pin, and a 10 pin which contains all of the ground wires. In 1991-1994 there are only two manor connectors on the engine harness. The ground wires were incorporated in the 16 pin connector. The ECUs for the '90-'94 engines all have four individual connectors. In 1995 things changed. The 1995 ECU has a single, gray connector and 1996-1999 engines have a single light blue connector. All of the engines from 1990 through 1996 have hydraulic lifters. The Impreza EJ22 (1997-1999) has roller rockers which are mechanical and can be adjusted.

Don Parham sell an excellent manual on the EJ series Fuel Injection. I bought one & found it to be worth twice as much as what I paid!
