Default World's Most Powerful Single Seat Gyroplane

Someone asked me last Saturday, at our PRA Chapter 56 hangar hangout, if the "Wicked" Air Commander LRT could possibly be the most powerful single-seat gyrocopter/ gyroplane in current operation in the USA, perhaps the world, in terms of brute HP, and/or power-to-weight ratio.

Things that make you go, "Hmmm".

Which, if you give a moose a muffin, brings up the next question: Does the Wicked have the longest range of any gyrocopter in the USA or even perhaps the world, at this time?

So I set some guidelines for the criteria for both questions, and those are laid out below. Basically this must be a gyro that has been successfully flown for some respectable duration during 2013.

Following are my claims, and the guidelines in which they are made.

I am hoping to find out if these claims are accurate or not, and If I don't own them who does??

Please post information to either support or contest them.

Guidelines:
1. MUST HAVE LOGGED A MINIMUM OF 20 SUCCESSFUL HOURS FLOWN IN 2013, IN THE CONFIGURATION CLAIMED.
2. IF REMOVING A SEAT TO MAKE A TWO-SEATER A SINGLE SEATER, THERE MUST BE A REASON - IT MUST MAKE SENSE. YOU CAN'T JUST REMOVE THE SEAT AND CALL IT A SINGLE. EXAMPLE: THE REMOVED SEAT IS REPLACED WITH A FULLY-OPERATIONAL FUEL TANK.
3. MUST BE A GYROPLANE
4. CLAIMED POWER MUST BE SUSTAINABLE. EXAMPLE: A SUBARU NORMALLY HAS 130HP, BUT IS ALTERED WITH A TURBOCHARGER THAT THE BUILDER CLAIMS PUTS OUT 170HP. IF PEAK HP CAN ONLY BE SUSTAINED FOR A FEW SECONDS W/O DAMAGING THE ENGINE, THAT IS NOT SUSTAINABLE POWER.
5. MODIFIED ENGINE POWER CLAIMS MUST BE VERIFIED WITH A REPUTABLE SHOP'S DYNO SHEET. STOCK ENGINE HP MAYBE VERIFIED BY POPULAR PUBLISHED STATISTICS AND TECH SHEETS.
6. WEIGHT CLAIMS MUST BE VERIFIABLE.

TITLES CLAIMED:

1. Most powerful gyroplane in the World, power:weight, empty (150hp:590lbs, 1:3.93)
2. Most powerful gyroplane in the USA, power:weight, empty

3. Most powerful single-seat gyroplane in the world, HP (150hp)
4. Most powerful single-seat gyroplane in the USA, HP

5. Most powerful two-seat gyroplane in the world, power:weight, empty
6. Most powerful two-seat gyroplane in the USA, power:weight, empty

7. Longest range gyrocopter in the world (25gal/5GPH x 70mph = 350 SM)
8. Longest range gyrocopter in the USA

9. Longest range single-seat gyrocopter in the world (17gal/5GPH x 70mph = 238 SM )
10. Longest range single-seat gyrocopter in the USA

11. Longest range two-seat gyrocopter in the world (25gal/5GPH x 70mph = 350 SM)
10. Longest range two-seat gyrocopter in the USA

Thanks in advance for your responses.

Default Raf 230hp

My RAF is standard except the Boyer tail and the Hunn stabalitor has been

added, I do not know what the current weight is.

My engine is a stock normaly aspirated 165 HP quad cam engine,a turbo

that produces only 6lbs of boost brings the HP up to 230 at sea level,

I have run this engine for more than 200 hrs and have used full power for

extended time periods.Using full throttle on takeoff and leveling off just above

the runway will put my machine through VNE in a matter of seconds, pulling

back on the cyclic will give me a sustainable rate of climb exceeding 1,200

FPM, all of this is at an altittude normally of more than 8,000 ft.

My fuel flow at 3,900 RPM is about 8 gph .

Best regards,eddie.....

Aren't records usually established by demonstrated rather than a theoretical performance (e.g., theoretical distance possible)?

Claiming one could go 400 miles when they've never been out of the pattern seems contrived.

Also seems odd that the 2-seat configuration has greater range than the single seat?

Most two seat units have better range because they are designed to hold more fuel for more useful load. They also have 4 stroke engines that seem to do better on fuel burn.

Default Jonathan Weis

I would like to see how Jonathan's Air Command compares.
I believe that monster had over 800lbs. of thrust.
At the time it had a 4 barrel carb normally aspirated Soob.

Hi

No need for bravado - put in an official claim

http://www.fai.org/record-rotorcraft

If you are looking for real record holders then take a look at Class E, and sub sections Ea and Eb.

Regards

Steve
