Default Tim O'Connor......BMW for ya

Tim- I thought of you at the Frasca fly-in that I flew to last Saturday. Rudy Frasca has this BMW in his museum with the sidecar. I could just see you riding that...and your side car dog with WW2 "doggles" on his head.

I dont know a thing about this motorcycle except it was clearly a BMW.

I think that is a Ural, Stan. The pushrods are on the upper side of the cylinders.

Thank you Stan!

Yes, my dog would love that! I wonder what he would think of the windshield on the side car?

He likes to have his face in the wind but he got hit with a bee in the snout Sunday and he was not happy about it.

Lee,

Quite correct! It is a Ural!

Stan, you are not completely off. The Ural is a kissing cousin to the BMW R75.

My BMW at present is a 1958 R50S and my Dog's "BMW" is a CJ-750 which like the Ural has a BMW history.

The CJ-M72 bikes really are BMW's in the sense they were produced under pre-war reparations license, BMW tooling, spares and in the case of the M1 have had almost no changes since the R71.

The Urals are great because they are classic and modern. They can be ridden on highways and at speeds above 50mph. They have a powered side car wheel with brake to make hack-riding easy and safe. However, they have few parts that can still be exchanged with their parent the R75.

My Dog's 1957 bike however, can have nearly any part except for the 12 volt generator, coil and light bulbs, swapped out with any 1934 BMW R71 as an exact fit. The price I pay for this nearly authentic R71 is a FLAT-Head - side valve engine and bike that was made to operate on dirt roads under 45mph. On modern roads I red-line at 55mph and the engine will overheat run that fast for a long distance.

I would have loved to see the Ural! Thanks for posting!
