Default Remote First Person View

The future of recreational flying?

Denise's UAV must be going to use some version of this.

"First-person view (FPV), also known as remote-person view (RPV), or simply video piloting, is a method used to control a radio controlled model vehicle from the driver or pilot's view point. Most commonly it is used to pilot an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) or a radio-controlled aircraft. The vehicle is either driven or piloted remotely from a first person perspective via an onboard camera, fed wirelessly to virtual reality goggles or a video monitor. More sophisticated setups include a pan-and-tilt gimbaled camera controlled by a gyroscope sensor in the pilot's goggles and with dual onboard cameras, enabling a true stereoscopic view."

My friend Walt Ferar, the guy I had come to China to fly my UAV, uses this system on his quad-copter for his photography business, flys it like a mile away!.

He has some video on youtube, it's fantastic. I''l try and get the youtube address and post it here.

Yes, I'm setting it up on our UAV helicopter as well.

Dave,

This is the one I use. It's cheap, and works great! It features head tracking as well.

Jon; That head tracking capability must be neat. Is yours stereoscopic

Dennis; A real estate saleman in Kelowna BC used a quad rotor to take interesting photos of homes that he was selling. He then stopped doing it because the city demanded that he file a flight-plan, or some other type of written application, each time.

It sure looks like the future of non-transport applications (and non-recreational applications) for rotorcraft.
Perhaps this might be the way to safely test significant changes to recreational rotorcraft without the loss of life or limb.

Not yet I'm also aquiring some telemetry and OSD equipment.

The head tracking works amazingly well. It's my favorite part. Most systems have latency problems, but this one is pretty good.

I installed this system on my new 1/4 scale gyro and I lilke it so much I'm thinking about upgrading to the super long range systems available.

This is awsome! Real flying experience without really flying. I want one of these.

Is anybody else worried about these things sharing the same air space as us. Machines flying around where the pilot has little if any peripheral vision to spot other aircraft.
You could avoid model flying fields before but these things are long range. God knows where they are.

Technically they become UAV's when they are out of line-of-sight.
I believe the FAA is working on some new regs for this.
Maybe a transponder would help?
I have marker lights on mine. Strobes too.

I have always dreamed of building an RC Instrument landing system on the runway so the RC pilot can actually fly pretend instrument approaches "under the hood" while spectators at the RC field watched the plane come in.

Jon, that sure sounds like fun. The next thing may be someone coming up with competitive games for them. Hide & Seek anyone?

Apparently there are 1,000 to 2,000 UAVs in use by the Armed Services. One major supplier is even promoting a small unmanned ship to the Navy. Perhaps, for small rotorcraft, the craft will not fire a weapon, it will be the weapon.

Default RPV view

I saw something like this (Youtube?) in a video recorded on some golf course. The guy mounted some fairly (for the time) sophisticated equipment on a fixed-wing R/C model. Camera was mounted on a gimbal and was controlled by motion sensors in the pilots helmet. It was very interesting to watch the pilot make a pass by himself as he stood on the ground.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again, for me personally the idea of these ultra high speed fancy toy models is just "plane" lame.
If you are going to aquire the skill to fly and the expense of these toys is sometimes MORE than a real aircraft, then by god risk the biscuits and put your ass in the seat. Flying is a viceral acheivment by man to deny gravity and physics for a small amount of time and somehow be more of a man when you rerturn to earth for having risked everything. Aside from some boo hoos and wallet shock what risk do you take by flying a uav? None, thats why we are killing Jihadis with them, the bird goes down, the pilot gets up yawns drinks another Jolt Cola and starts his mountain of paperwork to get another one launched.
But this is just my opinion, and Jon i'm sure anyhting you fly is going to be technically high end stuff.
Get out of the toys and into the seat.Period

I was thinking about air races. The technology is getting good enough I think. The problems being latency in the video feed.
Heck, you could even have dog fights. Have you seen the full size guys with the laser guns? Basically you shoot a laser at the other guy and it registers as a hit. Nobody gets hurt. Looks like alot of fun.
