Default Jet Hot Coating

I did a search for old info on this subject.......I guess I am lousy at searching !

Anyway, I need to have the exhaust manifold on my 503 coated like I had the entire exhaust done on the 447.

I am using the same exhaust just a new Y pipe manifold. It is looking like crap already & figured that I would have it done this winter.

I found their website & it seems they have all kinds of new stuff too.

I will be calling soon to find out the price & where to ship to.

I will try to find that old reciept to see what I payed years ago & see where I shipped it to then.

Has anyone had anything done by them lately ?

I use the Tempe shop for all my exhaust coatings. They have a new High Temp silver coating that looks pretty nice! I used it on my SCII. It seems to be holding up well? I keeps radiant heat away from the injection system. I never had a hot start once when the temp was 100 degrees F. They have black too. I'm getting ready to do a Sparrowhawk conversion exhaust system in black.

Don't use the 1300 it won't last on exhaust. I used the 2000 on the SCII.

The NC shop is the biggest shop.

Chris, I recently had my exhaust including the y manifold done. I posted photos in my build thread. It cost me $155 + $39 for return shipping.

I also had my Sport Copter exhaust done about six months ago. Cost was close to what Tim posted above.

They are now located in Oklahoma City.

Chris,

I have the shiny silver on both the Dom and SC.

As an alternative. I had many a Rotax exhaust system "metalized". They sand blast the exhaust system then spray it with molten aluminum. The finish is a fairly unattractive, grainy milky whitish silver BUT, you spray it with high temp flat black and it looks great and will never rust out. They used to metalize aircraft engine cylinders for corrosion proofing. I found a local metalizer to do my "snowmobile" exhaust. Cost was minimal, fast turnaround and no shipping. I really prefer the final product over Jet Hot (which I have used several times)

Tom,

How does this process ("metalized") work for reducing radiant heat?

I had my entire exhaust system done for the Monarch a couple years ago. All pieces were done with a good coating except the main one...the muffler itself. It had a very thin coating on it and had no luster, showed pitting, etc. When I called them, they told me to just use some Mother's Polish on it. They felt it did not need to be returned...I disagreed...anyway, I still have it on the machine with rust pits showing thru...end of story.

Mike, was your exhaust new or used when you had it coated? I've had 2 used ones done previously and though they still showed the existing pitting marks I never had them rust.

I got lucky, we have a shop that does metalizing. It is a process where the aluminum (or whatever metal is used) is in the form of wire, it runs through a spray gun as it is melted whether by flame or electric arc and sprays much like a paint spray gun. It does have a rough finish to it that looks like a freshly sandblasted surface. I did my BBQ pit then coated it with a glossy high heat paint, it's been about 8 years now, sits outside but does not have any rust on it. I also did my RAF exhaust a few months ago and coated it with a flat black high heat paint and so far still looks very good. The only problem with this process is that if at a later date you need to do any repairs it is very difficult to weld on and repair the coating. Sometimes we have to go out in the field and repair a metalized surface and even with very experienced people it is difficult.

Mike S. when you had the Monarch exhaust done was it local or did you have to ship it?

It sounds like the metalized process is only for corrosion protection? Does it offer heat shielding like the ceramic?

Metalizing will not give you any heat sheilding. Ceramic does but it's not much, it will still get hot enough to burn you.

Tim...not sure which Mike you were asking so I will reply.

Both of mine were very very used and rusted when I had them done. The Dom was done about 5 years ago and it is showing tiny pin sized rust spots but overall still looks pretty good. The SC*was just done this year so it obviously is still shiny like new but it has pitting since it was a very old and used muffler to start with.
