Default What determines mast height

What determines or influences the rotor mast height? Looking at couple of old models like Bensen or Ken Wallis and some latest designs Sportcopter etc, there is lot of difference in mast heights.

I was wondering the considerations that determine right mast height? What comes to my mind are
1. Rotor diameter flex and ground clearance
2. Vertical stabiliser clearance
3. Prop clearance
4. Approach for hand rotation

But all the above are physical or static considerations. What about in-flight considerations that give stability - like:
a. Weight of the machine - Rotor tilt angle (leverage in the moment arm)
b. Blade/Disk loading
c. G loading in Banks

Is there any established theory or calc. that could help home builders?

Dinesh

I would add to your list that mast height also impacts CoG.

Good one penguine. As you move up the mast the COG will move.

Is there any relationship to stick shake and mast height i.e. will the height of the mast dampen or increase the stick shake.
