report!
Hmm, lets see.
5500' and 3500' intersecting runways with parallel taxiways, grass runway also.
Air Conditioned terminal building
Resturant with patio, waitresses-with refills. Breakfast-lunch-supper- all buffet style. If you don't mind pushin the locals out of the way to get to the food.
Mens and Ladies restrooms.
Covered concourse with picnic tables to sit at - steady breeze. If you are not at the patio drinkin beverages.
Toilet and Shower facilities in our hangar.
Camping on the grounds - by the lake.
Too many hotels and eateries back in town. The Longhorn Steakhouse steak was to die for.
FBO loaned me tools to work on my gyro, twice.
Got Avgas from fueltruck on Saturday, paid for on Sunday.
Forget walking, Kawasaki mule and Golfcart for rides; they even towed me on the gyro.
The Airport Authority, the FBO's, Museum personel, EAA Chapter, Awh heck - everyone were incredably friendly.
Shelbyville has always (15 years) been my favorite flyin.
BUT
this has the makings of a flyin experience which goes to the next level!!!

If you did not come on down, you really missed a great weekend of fun.
maybe next year, you won't miss out

Default Forget the great weather!

Mid-80 degrees! David said it all. Mt Vernon is a great place for a fly-in, like an all facilities airport that loves gyros and treats you like kings. The locals were all out and astounded at gyros too.

Sorry, I was busy talking and flying - had lots of requests for rides and gave a little dual time to some who needed it. Didn't take a single picture! I'll see if Steph got any to post.

Chris Collins is the Airport Manager at Mt Vernon. He was great, always making sure we had everything we needed. Chris gets to fly in a lot of aircraft, but I think he was really surprised by his first gyro ride. He jumped at my offer for a ride and I was able to show him first hand a few things only gyros can do and how we can operqte around an airport. The airport was not too busy, but we did shut down for a while on Saturday around noon for a big Bombadier jet to come in. Even the restaurant manager was super friendly. Local news and even the airport board gave us a lot of attention.

Our gyros were front and center at the terminal -0 right in front of the restaurant patio where all could watch in shaded comfort. Local airport volunteers Don and Steve spent all their days there helping out with all - especially keeping all the visitors safe around the gyros parked in front. I gave both a ride, but afterward I found out that Don had never been seen flying in an airplane ever! He didn't hesitate when I offered him a ride, and he flew the gyro well enough I figured he gets a lot of rides. Then, his friends told me they couldn't believe that he took the ride - never saw him fly before!

On Friday, one of our members discovered an engine problem on the ground. The mechanic on field provided tools and time to investigate. The issue was serious, but the mechanic helped disassembly to assess the problem - even insisted on keeping the gyro in his work hangar overnight so he could see the disassembly on Saturday morning. No Charge!!!!

We stayed at the Holiday Inn in town - great and luxurious place - not normal for a gyro fly-in! Felt really safe there too - about 50 officers staying at the Inn this weekend too! I thought now Mt Vernon is going a bit overboard for us! But, then we found out the Illinois State Fair was this weekend too at nearby DuQuoin, IL.

They really do have a beautiful little lake on airport property for camping. The grounds are wide open and plenty of smooth grass areas and taxiways! As gyro fliers new to the airport people there, we were a bit careful in how and where we flew over the airport property. This was Chris's first introduction to gyro type flying, so we are hoping to expand how and where we can have our fun in one of the corners of the airport. So we didn't try to have any games this first year. But we are talking about working with Chris to see what we might do next year to entertain the folks even more.

Mt Vernon has a reputation for this friendliness with all the organizations that love to visit and operate there. Sept 9-11 is the Midwest LSA Expo there - will be lots of displays and presentations. This is BIG! Ya'll come. I'll be there too.

Overall I think Chapter 35 will be back. And, next time I think it will be big - our new SHELBYVILLE event. I think Steph and I and some other gyro couples in the area will be visiting Mt Vernon more often throughout the year - nice people and really nice town. Chris and the airport board have been making even more enhancements to the airport - such as the new giant hangar we kept the gyros in overnight, the restaurant patio and the all-you-can-eat buffet meals all day, etc.
