Question Half-scale Bensens?

A fellow chapter member who used to live in So. California told me about a older fellow there who years ago built and flew himself in his Bensen-style gyro that was about half the size of usual single seat gyro...

It supposedly had rotorblades that were around 11 or 12 feet in diameter...

Anyone ever hear of that?

I've got a quarter scale KB-2 with a 503. Problem is, I can't fit in it.

Re: the half -scale Bensen. If it could fly at all with 11 or 12 ft diameter rotor, it would have had a tremendous power off rate of descent of thousands of ft/min and very high landing speed. Disk loading is 4 times normal.

I did find one example of a helicopter with 12 ft rotors, but it had two of them.

Man-carrying half scale airplanes have been built. It is really pushing the limits of what's possible.

I had my Brock plans and blew them up to quarter scale. It's pretty much all balsa so the time came from making templates incase I made another one. Very easy to work with.

I made an Air Command for a friend and a Bensen for my old instructor Steve Graves for his students.

Too bad I couldn't put an O.S engine on it and fly it as an r/c.

Dale,

I've been thinking about building an R/C model of my Gyrobee. Please give us more info on yours- engine size, rotor diameter, etc.

Thanks,
Alan

Alan, The one you see pictured will probably require a 50 in rotor, a 40-45 size engine ,although electric is intriguing! . I'm going to keep it as scale as I can(except for the fuel tank) I can't seem to find any that are dimentionally correct or hold enough fuel. those size engines are thirsty! If you build it 1/6th scale,a G.I. Joe or 21st century soldier will fit perfectly. Even the wheels are scale. By the way,... That's a great job Mark!!

Default Scale SnoBird too

A young Indiana man, who's name escapes me, owned a SnoBird Exciter 503 and built a very detailed model of it. This model was detailed down to miniature saddles on the round tubes, "U" brackets and hardware.

It was probably worth more than his "real" machine and much, much harder to build.

Dale,

Could you seal up GI Joe and use him for a fuel tank? It would look a little weird while you fill up, but help get the look you want with enough fuel capacity.
