Exclamation Bensen Days Media Fallout! Some of the first footage of it's kind coming soon!!!!!!!!

Well, I am back home in Cincinnati from B-Days.

It was a great time!

I will be posting still photos over the next couple of days. I did loose one of my cameras but I think I got most of the footage off of it before I lost it.

What is going to be amazing is the VIDEO footage that will be posted over the next couple of weeks.

Forum member Greg Spicola allowed me to attach my Oregon Scientific A-18 video camera to his flight helmet.

During one of his flights of yanking and banking around the FL countryside he caught what I think is the ONLY existing AIR-TO-AIR footage of an engine out.

While flying with Tim Chick, Scott Essex, Dave Bliss and Kevin Aurandt, Greg caught Scott's engine failing at about 75 feet AGL and him making a textbook, engine out landing into a rough cow pasture in 15kt gusting wind facing DOWNWIND.

Greg then landed to check out Scott (who was just fine as well as his machine) while the others circled overhead.

Greg also captured video of gyros and MOSQUITO helicopters mixing it up TOGETHER around the country side cranking and banking from 100ft AGL down to the deck in some amazing, skilled flying.

During some of the high crosswinds at B-Days a bad wind roll developed at the tree line next to the runway. Greg captured some eye-opening footage of a violent DOWNDRAFT. It looks like a giant invisible fly-swatter just whacked his gyroplane down.

On the eye candy side of things I have some footage taken with a fish-eye lens on board Ron's new machine, a PPC and Tommy May's RAF.

Kevin has some Knee-Cam footage in HD quality video which includes some footage of Greg's take-off out of the cow pasture and more Air-to-air cranking and banking.

We all shared our footage with each other and you can expect some post from each of us.

Tim Chick is more of a video guy than I and I hope what with his editing skill, gyro-tv setup and editing software we will see some of these gems showing up on the forum, you tube, gyro-TV and the GyroWiki very soon.

Stay tuned!!!!

Ok.. Scott drug it out of me on the forum about my engine out in the bull pasture last year at Bensen days.

Scott... wha' happened? What engine were you running? Did you get it running again? Since it appears nothing was hurt, I guess a little ribbing is in order hehehe

Feel free to shoot me next time you see me.. BTW I need an airworthiness check.

Well I took the engine apart, looks like I melted the top of the #1 (Mag) piston,
It looks like pre ignition to me, I'll post pics later, could be from low octane gas, or a lean condition, although since it didn't tear up the piston skirt, I am leaning toward the pre ignition.
I have had engine outs with: Arrow, Hirth, Rotax, and now Arctic Cat.
It really was a non-event, which is good.
We were flying low, fast, and turned downwind, it could have gotten ugly.
Instead I just had to wait for the rescue team to bring a trailer, while the other gyro's circled overhead. I didn't know if they were circling to let the rescuers know where the downed aircraft was, or if they were like buzzards.

Default Rendering !

If you are exporting a final video project, make sure you have the best or highest quality (high bit rate) output to file selected. I remember when Tim Chick did the great 2006 video of Bdays he did not have the settings right and there was loss of video quality.

Looking forward to all the good footage !

Scott,

What pistons did you have the engine ?

What fuel were you running ?

Glad to hear your OK Scott.

Are you going to fix the Arctic cat or go back to the Rotax?

Jon I have OEM pistons and spark plugs. (NGK br10es)
I was running Texaco 87 with Amsoil 100:1 synthetic oil.

Now that I think about it, I usually run premium, 87 has always been fine in the rotax if I ran it out that weekend.

I know that that was my mistake.

Robert, I will probably try it again with the arctic cat, we'll see.

Sorry Scott, That is a bummer.
I agree with another Artic Cat, Work the fuel issue out and it should be a great machine.
If you need help finding one let me know, I think I can hook you up.

Thanks Racer, I got the pistons out and #1 is scored very badly on the skirt, I just could not see it through the port.
The funny thing is that the EGT read 1000 degrees the whole time.
I am trying to get the photos now.

Jonathan,

The footage was taken with an Oregon Scientific A-18.

It does not have the quality of modern digital video cam corders.

It takes 640x480 at 30 fps. Better then You-Tube quality but not as good as say a DVD. More like classic VHS.

It was the latter Scott they were just waiting for you to walk back to the airport and they would have swooped down........
and when you got back your gyro would have been up on blocks and ghetto striped! I'm sure of it.

How does this text for the video sound??

Greg Spicola captured what is believed to be the only existing Air-To-Air footage of a gyro engine out event.

Greg was wearing a helmet cam fitted with an Oregon Scientific digital video camera.

While touring the remote rural countryside of Florida, during a 15-20 mph gusty windy day, a group of gyroplanes were flying together and practicing maneuvers.

The lead gyroplane, owned by pilot Scott Essex had an engine failure at ~ 70 feet AGL just after turning downwind.

Because autogyros are always in auto-rotation they maintain almost full maneuverability in an engine out scenario and can make a zero roll landing even on very rough terrain.

After Scott executes a text-book perfect engine out landing, Greg, flying the next ship in the formation lands in the pasture to investigate.

Meanwhile, the rest of the gyroplanes, flown by Dave Bliss and Kevin Aurandt circle above.

Scott was compeltely unharmed and the gyroplane suffered no damage.

The gyroplane was recovered with a pickup truck within the hour.
