Default Exciting New Rotay Engine (XR50)

There is a new engine that is starting to be used on Gyroplanes that everyone should be aware of. It is a single rotor, 4 stroke Rotary engine called the Aixro XR50. "www.woelfle-engineering.com" This engine was originally developed by a company in Germany for the Go Kart racing industry. However, because of it's extreme power to weight ratio and projected reliability I believe it is begging to be used as a light aircraft engine.

The Cloud Dancer Gyro is using 2 of these engines for it's power plant. And I think it would make an ideal engine for any ultra light Gyro. At max output this engine develops 48 HP and it only weighs 35 lbs. It is kind of pricey in my opinion (over $5,000.00), but it seems to be a quantum leap ahead of anything else out there in this HP range so it might be worth it.

Larry Neal is making this engine an option for the drive portion of the Super Sky Cycle and I am putting it on mine right now. I will be glad to update you with reports of how it is working for me once I get to put some time on it. The Kart Racing Industry has been running this engine hard now for almost 3 years with very good results. I think this could be a great addition to power plants available to Gyroplanes. Contact info. below. Ask for Jo.

While there are lots of exciting new engines that are supposedly becoming available any time now, this is one exciting engine that is available today. Check it out and see what you think.

Doug,

That's great! I have always liked rotary engines. Do you happen to have any data on rpm/hp curves? Feel free to point me back to the web links if that is where the data lives.

JC,

I don't remember which site has the chart you are looking for but one of the 2 websites I listed in my first post, has exactly what you are looking for.

John,

I also read that post where someone said they are working on a turbo version of this engine. I believe with a turbo on this engine, this could become a great engine for a lot of our lighter single place machines. It still isn't going to be enough power for a SSC like mine, but with 2 of them on there it could sure make for a great performing machine. I would love to see this come out with a turbo. What a package that would be.

Doug,

What are you using for a gear box?

Leon,

In my application and because of the flat torque curve I am not using any gear box. Just a direct drive setup with a gear ratio that allows me to control the max engine rpm by controlling the speed I limit the SSC to when driving down the road, I am not using this engine to fly on and so I don't need a PRSU to maximize the thrust. I am only using it to drive the cycle while on the ground and it has much more power than I need to do that.

Thank you John we are very interested in your engine!!!

Could you post your testing results here! We will also try and have them publish in the at least PRA's new on-line magazine section for you.

Thanks for the picture too!!! We like pictures.

Phantom Aircraft was trying to use one of these engines on their ultralight type aircraft, but was having problems with crank breakages as I recall.
