ROTORS OVER THE ROCKIES 2009 UPDATE: I drove the route and checked out West Desert Airpark this morning (6/12), and after seeing the current state of the construction zone, I've revised the advice below for those coming from the north. The lanes on Redwood Road between Bangerter and SR 73 weave among orange barrels and are very narrow with tight twists in spots, and could be unpleasant if you're pulling a trailer. If you're coming from the north without a trailer, the exit 289 option will still save you 14 miles, but may not save you any time.
One additional note - the paved portion of the private road leading to the airport has some significant potholes this year. Take it slow! And so... FROM THE NORTH WITHOUT A TRAILER: Take I-15 south to exit 289, Bangerter Highway. Turn RIGHT toward Riverton and Bluffdale. Continue 2.5 miles. Turn LEFT on Redwood Road, SR-68. Continue 7.8 miles. Watch for a major intersection, large Chevron station on the right. This is SR-73. Turn RIGHT. Continue approximately 15.3 miles through the towns of Cedar Fort and Fairfield. The road will curve, varying from southbound to westbound. West Desert Airpark will appear on your left, shortly after SR-73 makes a gradual right curve from southbound to westbound. The dirt road on the left is marked with two large signs, one for "Global One Resource Group," (a landfill,) the other for "Rocky Mountain Kitplanes / West Desert Airpark." (See picture below.) (Note - Less than 100 yards before reaching the dirt road on your left, you'll see a brown sign on your right which says, "CAMP FLOYD CEMETARY 1/4 MI." See picture below.) --------------------------------------------------- ALL ARRIVALS FROM THE SOUTH, AND ALL VEHICLES PULLING TRAILERS: Take I-15 to exit 279, the SR-73 Lehi exit. Turn LEFT. Continue west about 19.5 miles through the towns of Lehi, Cedar Fort and Fairfield. The road will curve, varying from southbound to westbound. West Desert Airpark will appear on your left, shortly after SR-73 makes a gradual right curve from southbound to westbound. The dirt road on the left is marked with two large signs, one for "Global One Resource Group," (a landfill,) the other for "Rocky Mountain Kitplanes / West Desert Airpark." (See picture below.) (Note - Less than 100 yards before reaching the dirt road on your left, you'll see a brown sign on your right which says, "CAMP FLOYD CEMETARY 1/4 MI." See picture below.) We've made special arrangements to have the cold front and rain move through tonight through Thursday morning, to make sure the grass is green and the dust is damp, and the forecast now calls for a sunny weekend, high Friday 77. See you there! Links to: Utah Rotorcraft Association ; West Desert Airpark Last edited by PW_Plack; 06-12-2009 at 03:22 PM. Reason: Revised directions for 2009. |

Thanks Paul,
And THANKS to everyone that has helped get this Fly In set up and promoted. It has grown into much more than I originally imagined it could be. This is going to be fun!!!! I am getting so excited I am going to have a hard time sleeping tonight. I went grocery shopping last night and bought enough food to feed my wife and I for about a month (to take with us to the Fly In) so I may need a little help getting it eaten over the weekend. So anyone that get's hungry, stop on by. We'll be in the main Head Quarters Tent. See you soon. Gyro Doug |

SEE ABOVE! I've edited the first post in this thread with revised instructions for anyone coming to Rotors Over The Rockies from the north, reflecting construction changes.
Here's a photo taken Friday at West Desert Airpark. We've had lots of rain in the past week, as evidenced by the puddle on the near side of the taxiway. The good news is everything's greened up, and there's fresh snow on the mountains above 10,000 feet. The forecast for the event so far says mostly sunny and 80ºF Thursday, 82º Friday. This next one was a webcam test. During the event, I'm going to try for a spot closer to the taxiway. The software will take a still frame every time an aircraft moves through the camera shot, and FTP the new one to the website.

John,
Use Doug's list. The Google search returned several that are miles farther away than necessary. Paul |
