Default Noise ??

Hello and happy new year
Any practical tips for noise reduction on a single seater?
My 582 A/C are very noisy even with noise reduction headsets
Has anyone done a single seat enclosed gyro other than jt-5?
I don't want to be 50 and deaf
regards
Leon

Leon...

I'd be interested in hearing (no pun intended) from anyone who HAS buildt a JT-5. Any email addresses you could pass along if you know any builder/owners would be appreciated.

Regards,

Andy

Default Seat Back

What about a plywood seatback extending behind and above the seat tank, kinda like a firewall, maybe with styrofoam core to save weight.
just enough to cut engine and prop noise down

Screw-In

Is the noise Radio or engine?

If engine you can reduce your noise level by slowing down the prop. Change your gear ratio so you can dial in more pitch at a slower rpm to achieve the same thrust.

If the noise is radio noise the increases and decreases with engine rpm, there are several filters available or you can use an intercom from Comtronics. The intercome itself has a filter built in.

However, the cheapest thing would be to wear ear plugs.

I hope this helps.

Default Noise Reduction

When flying the MD500 Helicopter, the transmission is only a few inches behind your head. The only head set that I have found to significantly reduce the noise is the Telex ANR Headsets.

Prince Prop is the quietest I've ever heard. Prop noise #1 offender. #2 is intake, #3 is exhaust, in that order.

I wear earplugs even with my flight helmet. Then I crank up the radio so I can hear it.

Works Great....

Default noise

i don't have electronic noise
it's more wind and prop noise
i changed my prop to a warp and it made a big improvement
in south africa we are very strict about radio procedures which makes the wind noise a problem
The Air Command windscreen en right about below your chin with the full force of that in your face
I am considering a canopy like the falcon
would have to change to horisontal and vertical stab though

Default Wind Noise

When a friend of mine bought a new Comtronics helmet a few years back at Mentone, we went for a spin with it. There was so much wind noise (open cockpit), I couldn't hear anything over it (I have some hearing loss already). What we did was put poly-fill, the kind used for pillow stuffing, around the microphone and then a very soft leather bag over that with a small hole facing your mouth. This took all the wind noise away and made for much clearer and understandable communication. It had a foam cover standard but this alone did not take care of the wind noise. Might try the simple fix before the expensive ones.

You won't be deaf when you're fifty...I'm over 70 and only deaf in one ear.

Cheers

I'v found cabs dont help alot wen it comes to noise reduction.
its actualy easier on the ears with the doors off the wasa than with them on, the 'throb' of the ivo magnum prop seems to resonate round the cab with the doors on.
As M. Jackson said, the prop is the worst offender for noise, and i'v been told plenty of times that since i'v gon to 2 blade props, its much quieter from the ground and in the pilots seat.
As for the noise maken radio transmition difficult, the mic needs to be well sheilded from wind by a full face helmit if you have no windscreen.
The Oz made one i use is as good as if i was sitn on the ground with the engine off.

Hello Leon.

I wear ear phones under ear muffs and put the helmet on.

Get a helmet which is covered from the back, specially behind the ears.

Mil Comtronics were very noisy. So I switched to Mil Gentex ones.

Best Wishes.
Rehan
