Ben S; Pistol question.

Ben- I know you are not a fan of Glocks....and thats ok...its like makes of cars. But...I was wanting to mention to you about a pistol I had years ago....a Benelli 76. I loved that gun. It had an unusual kind of a double lobe cam that caused a delayed blow back action. The cam kept the breech locked together for a slight bit of rearward travel, then because of the geometry of the cam, the breech slipped open after dangerous pressures had passed. It shot real nice and fit my hand perfectly. However....I traded it for a Browning Hi-Power which ended up being a jam-o-matic. I had two Brownings that did that. Then I had a Beretta 92 which never failed...but it was too large for my taste. Then I came across my Glock 23, and love it. The LaserMax works real cool, but its one of the older red laser units. I think..but havent checked in a few years ...that they were coming out with a more daylight visible green laser. I guess I could go google Lasermax and find out.

You really know your guns....and its interesting reading. I dont have much of a collection....I have a Hi-Standard Trophy ....Supermatic....god..its been so long since I have looked at it....its a very accurate .22 pistol....I used it for squirrel hunting as well. I have shot every squirrel in my life with a pistol. My best year was 42 squirrels with my Glock. I had the 42nd squirrel mounted...and ate all the other 41 squirrel. Man....I about drove Barbara squirrely that year!

the Benelli is a great gun!
I don't dislike the Glocks, they pay for my Gyro Fuel Fund on a daily basis! I just don't like it when a firearm is bestowed godlike abilities. How many times have you heard of the "legendary" reliability of the AK-47? Guess what it breaks down too! I know, I use them to train Foreign troops.
They are just machines, nothing more. Now a beautiful S&W 629 Mountain Revolver in 44 mag with class c engraving and custom grips?...thats a thing of art!

That would be a class three registered as an AOW.

Ben,
I am looking for a back up carry conceal. What are your thoughts on the ruger 380 lcp and the s&w bodyguard 380 auto?

Steve...

Steve...

no comparison between the two for the money the Smith is ALL over the Ruger in features. Integrated laser,Thumb Safety that works the right way and a last shot slide hold open with decent usable sights for about 50$ more? No question the Smith is the clear pick. But they can be hard to get. And you might not like the feel of it and so on...but based on features the Ruger comes up pretty short for the money.

(So sayeth the all knowing grand poo-bah of gun stuff on gyro forums:yo:)
This was of course meant tongue in cheek....

I reckon the best carry gun is the one you've shot the most ... In my case, a S&W Model 19 round-butt snubby which I bought on my 21'st birthday, some 34 years ago.

I'd take it to an actual gunfight any day, but then, I'm an old dude with old-fashioned sensibilities.

My stainless Springfield Armory Champion loaded 1911 in .45 acp with stag grips is my favorite carry gun . And thats just till I can get to my Springfield Armory M-1A / M-14 .

Excellent thread, thanks for posting it!

Americans have a complicated way of telling the whole world how well they are armed. It is like they extend their personality through a firearm or something. I have always found that interesting.

I admire what they stand for. I just could never understand why they need to hold a gun to proclaim their position. Stand on a soap box and defend your position without a firearm in your hands. Then you have something.

Firearms are secondary , principles and values are primary , quit hiding behind your guns fellows. Your values have more power than all the gunpowder in the world. Dont confuse the two.

Arnie,

Our values are why we have guns. To protect them and the ones who share them (values).

My personal protection is of utmost value. I will defend it with any means necessary. The means I have available to me are guns. Without them, I am at the mercy of villians, car jackers, atm thiefs, home invasion, etc.

The world we live in....oh forget it. I'll stop the nancy bs and move on :)

I will not be at the mercy of another human. I will be the survivor.

I'm not hiding. I'm in the face of whatever comes at me with an expanding .45 caliber bullet traveling at speeds sure to shred flesh.

I like you Arnie, but please understand that without our guns, we are at the mercy of ANY enemy (foreign or domestic).

Jon

PS you can't out talk a thief, but you can blow his brains all over the place :)

Master Roda . . .you do have a problem . . .see a shrink please!
Hey
We did not mention Sig Sauers, did we?

Dont be too sensitive Heron, I smiled while writing that knowing I would get a response :)
Truth is, I don't want too hurt anyone less they try to harm me. It's logical self preservation.

A little tidbit from last week...

Armed Beauty Queen Fatally Shoots Intruder in Florida Home Invasion

When a burly ex-convict forced his way into a posh Florida home last week, he had no idea what awaited him -- a 25-year-old beauty queen with a pink .38-caliber handgun.

Meghan Brown, a former Florida pageant queen, shot and killed 42-year-old Albert Franklin Hill during a home invasion March 12 at the 2,732-square-foot house she shares with her fiance in Tierra Verde, Fla.

Hill barged into the home at around 3 a.m. after Brown responded to a knock at the front door, according to a police report. He allegedly grabbed the 110-pound Brown around her nose and mouth and dragged her to an upstairs bedroom.

The woman’s fiance, Robert Planthaber, said in an interview that he was quickly awakened by the altercation and ran to Brown’s side.

"I attacked him and took a severe beating to the head," Planthaber told FoxNews.com. "But I got him off of her long enough for her to scramble to the room where she keeps her pink .38 special.”

Brown, who reigned as the 2009 Miss Tierra Verde, snatched her gun from a nearby bedroom and shot the suspect several times – hitting him in the chest, groin, thigh and back, her fiance said. Hill was pronounced dead at the scene.

How else is a 110 lb woman going to defend herself from some sick %$#@..?

"God created man, Sam Colt made them equal."

Arnie, I support your comment 1-100%

I wonder why most of the civilised world gets along without a gunslinging attitude?

I think the gun-requiring scenario the pro-gunslinging members are picturing is a product of having guns so freely available in the first place.

I maintain the viewpoint, weapons in any shape or form are exclusively for use in the domain of para-military and security forces, not private citizens.

Well, the discussion is about pistols but I have to say two things:
1 - gun powder starts all this, so by consequence Sam Colt did squat (go see that shrink)
2 - it is statistic, more people are hurt by gun fire than needed,
I love weapons since I was a kid, no freedom blabber involved, they are mesmerizing machines and comes from several places in the world. Lots of people collect them and some use them as protection reinforcement, been aware of your surroundings is the first rule.
I don´t have to justify my choices and wave a flag, mind you I can wave two of them, having two countrys I am proud off.
NOw . . .what about the Sig Sauers?
thanks
Heron
MR, don´t blame yourself, when you were a kid they started indoctrinating you, no need for a shrink at a first glance! :D

While I respect your views, I do not think that Most Americans feel like the gov will provide protection. Although the current administration wants to make us like a European socialist
society where every person has cradle to grave Gov involvement in every aspect of their life...There are still people that believe in self reliance and self responsibility, That is why the settlers left Europe, they didn't like it!

I carry a gun because I can't carry a cop.

When seconds count, the police are minutes away, I'll take my chances defending myself, my family, my property, rather than wait for some one else to save me.

Here is a quick read:

A LITTLE GUN HISTORY

In 1929, the Soviet
Union established gun control. From 1929 to 1953, about 20 million dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

------------------------------
In 1911, Turkey established gun control. From 1915 to 1917, 1.5 million Armenians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

------------------------------
Germany established gun control in 1938
and from 1939 to 1945, a total of 13 million Jews and others who were unable to defend themselves were rounded up and exterminated.

---------------------------
China established gun control in 1935.
>From 1948 to 1952, 20 million political dissidents, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated

------------------------------

Guatemala established gun control in 1964. From 1964 to 1981, 100,000 Mayan Indians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

-------------
Uganda established gun control in 1970.
>From 1971 to 1979, 300,000 Christians, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

------------------------------
Cambodia
established gun control in 1956. From 1975 to 1977, one million educated people, unable to defend themselves, were rounded up and exterminated.

-----------------------------

Defenseless people rounded up and exterminated in the 20th Century because of gun control: 56 million.

------------------------------
It has now been 12 (several years now since this piece was written) months since gun owners in Australia were forced by new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by their own Government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in:

List of 7 items:

Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent.

Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent.

Australia-wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)!

In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not, and criminals still possess their guns!

While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drastically upward in the past 12 months, since criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed.

There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the ELDERLY. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort, and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. The Australian experience and the other historical facts above prove it. You won't see this data on the US evening news, or hear politicians disseminating this information.

Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws adversely affect only the law-abiding citizens.

Take note my fellow Americans, before it's too late!

The next time someone talks in favor of gun control, please remind them of this history lesson.

With guns, we are 'citizens'. Without them, we are 'subjects'.

During WWII the Japanese decided not to invade America because they knew most Americans were ARMED!

If you value your freedom, please spread this anti-gun control message to all of your friends.

The purpose of fighting is to win. There is no possible victory in defense. The sword is more important than the shield, and skill is more important than either. The final weapon is the brain. All else is supplemental.

SWITZERLAND ISSUES EVERY HOUSEHOLD A GUN! SWITZERLAND 'S GOVERNMENT TRAINS EVERY ADULT THEY ISSUE A RIFLE. SWITZERLAND HAS THE LOWEST GUN RELATED CRIME RATE OF ANY CIVILIZED COUNTRY IN THE WORLD!!!

IT'S A NO BRAINER! DON'T LET OUR GOVERNMENT WASTE MILLIONS OF OUR TAX DOLLARS IN AN EFFORT TO MAKE ALL LAW ABIDING CITIZENS AN EASY TARGET.

On a side note:

Automobiles annually claim 45,000 to 60,000 lives in the U.S. alone, yet no one advocates the ablolishment of the automobile, or busses.

Accidental deaths in hospitals annually run between 95,000 to 110,00.

While according to the National Safety Council's statistics, firearm deaths run about 15,000 per year, with about 6,000 of those due to handguns, of which 4,000 are suicides.

It would appear that one is safer with your firearm than in a car or a hospital.

Francois,
You need to take some lessons from your countryman Birdy. He will not support your ideas.
