Cool NZ YouTube video called "Dominator Autogyro being flown hard by an expert"

I thought some of you might enjoy seeing this New Zealander pushing the envelope in a Dominator.

...seems that GyroRon may have an alter ego on the other side of the world!?!

Enjoy!

Please excuse if this video has been posted previously. I could not find it...

That was very cool, thanks for sharing.

Now I've got a question. This doesn't seen anymore dangerous to me than flying aerobatics in FW aircraft.

He keeps the blades well loaded, and is flying inside the flight envelope (to me), what am I missing, here guys.

What maneuver is the dangerous one and how will it get me in trouble after I've trained to do them?

PS:
If I can't fly her like Steve, Birdy, Ron, Chris, ... and this guy, not sure I really want one????

Certainly seen it before but enjoy it every time. Great to see someone really enjoying themselves and exploring the envelope. Now that is what flying is all about.

John, That is what gyros are made for. Nothing dangerous there as far as the flight envelope. Pure Joy.

Looks like a SUB4, of of them high powered Neil Hintz machines. :)

Nice flying... Some of the moves he does in the beginning do tend to unload the rotor somewhat and should be done with caution, but otherwise it is nice flying. And heck I ain't special, most people that have a good seat of the pants sensor should be able to do everything I or that guy in the video has ever done. It's just stick, Rudder and throttle and when your done, a Kool-Aid smile :)

Ron, I've seen some of your videos, you fly the hell out of your machine...you and Birdy and a few others...and it is pure aviation porn. I can't get enough...

Thanks guys, that answered my question!!!

Long stroke, recoilless landing gear removes most of the risk from those kinds of situations.

Paul, as long as the rotor is still attached, terminal velocity will be ~1200 fpm or 20 fps. I doubt terminal velocity can be reached in 50 ft. With any translation, rate of descent will be about ½ of that.

But say the thing is traveling 20 fps at contact with the surface.

With landing gear stroke of 2 feet, deceleration from 20 fps will be:

A = V²/2s

= 400/4

= 100 fps²

= 100/32

= 3.125 G

A 3 G landing impact probably won’t bend anything on a Dominator and if the pilot is skilled, he should be able to make a reasonably graceful landing from 50 ft. with 20 mph of airspeed. It won’t hang on the prop much slower than that.

I once ran out of gas while hanging on the prop at 20 ft, trying to out do a friend in a slow flight shootout (I knew it was about out of gas but the lighter it is, the better the slow flight.).

I thumped in pretty hard but nothing bent or broke. That was a gyro built more or less to Bensen B-8 dimensions except for round 2024 tube instead of square 6061 and with Hughes OH-6 rotorblades of probably 24’ diameter.

Sweet video, makes me jealious, I'm constantly battleing bumps in my 200lb true ultralight! I couldn't make those moves if I had too! I'm gonna build a bee someday!

I thought everybody flew that way. I'd hate to drop in with that big engine but I didn't see where he was going to.
I wish I had his machine but I know too many jumpers and can't afford a law suit, and families always sue.

:hail:Really nice flying. I was especially impressed with his first idle engine landing when with the nose as high as it goes he lightly touched down and then instantly rocketed out at the same angle.... lots of power there!!!

If it were me though I would be wondering whether a stock (I assume) Dom can handle the greatly increased loads of not just the hot dogging but with the added strssors from that extra heavy Soob motor.

Made me jealous as I sit grounded.

These little emoticons smilies are so gay! :drama:
