The National Museum Of Flight in Scotland offers 360° Cockpit views of some of its airplanes, the Vulcan cockpit is pretty awesome. I had visited the museum last year so this brings back some great memories.....

John, I am glad you liked it. Sometimes I just have to bother the forum with the stuff that strikes me...;-)
The plane they have at East Fortune took part in the Falkland operations. They flew missions from Ascension island to the Falklands (4000 miles, one way!) using fifteen Victor tanker planes for seventeen in flight refuellings to get one Vulcan there and back again. This particular plane broke the refuelling probe and had to divert to Brazil. I had read about it in a book called Vulcan 607.... great story of a great bunch of pilots, crew and support group.... if you come across it, give it a try! There is a Vulcan near me at the former Castle Air Force Base museum (now a civilian airport, near Atwater, CA, i.d., KMER), and they have an "open cockpit day" once or twice per year. Last time I went, both the SR-71 and the Vulcan were open. I've actually climbed up inside, and it's quite an experience. You really feel for the back three crewmen, who face the rear and unlike the pilots have no ejection seats.
If you care to visit there, it's lots of fun to fly in because the ramp is so big (made for scores of B-52s and tankers, with a 12,000 ft by 150 ft runway, and many square miles of concrete) that you can easily spot it from a ridiculous distance. |

Thanks for the link Juergen.
Looking at the Flight Engineers station in the Concorde... Where the hell is that on/off switch? Seems like there needs to be a stimulant drip-line there also. Chris |

Below are two pictures of Vulcan XM597 at East Fortune. The pictures are good old analog, the bad quality you notice is due to my scanner. I feel that you are always mislead by her graceful lines to believe she's a pretty small ship. If you stand underneath here bomb bay though you have the impression of looking up into a row of 40ft containers...;-)
