Not really a "gyro" note. In the late stages of WW2 Imperial Japan released thousands of balloons (made of paper no less!) with incendiary and anti-personnel ordinance attached and released them into the jet stream. With the intention of causing massive forest fires in the Greater Northwest and hampering the war effort.

In the pre-dawn hours of March 23, 1945 one of these balloons drifted over Woodson, Texas and the bomb fell in the school yard. No injuries were reported but I told there were some jangled nerves. Another fell into a pasture near Desdemona, Texas with no damage. Ergo, my old home-town is the only settlement in Texas to suffer aerial bombardment by one of the Axis powers during WW2!

Woodson, Texas is located 60 miles NNE of Abilene, Texas.

There were fatalities from these devices, a school teacher and one student were killed in Michigan. Most of the devices fell in unpopulated areas of Canada. It was one of the most kept secrets of the war not wanting the enemy to know what effect, if any, these attackers were having. Also the coast of California was shelled by ememy destroyers during the early part of the war.
