Default new sparrowhawk mod.

After some thought and a little courage, I decided to build a simple keel extension and change the tail feathers from the tall tail to the RAF vertical stab with the Boyer horizontal stab. I test flew it 2 days ago and it was a major improvement in stability over the tall tail. I missed my modified RAF with the drop keel. I THINK I AM IN LOVE AGAIN.
Sorry about the one photo. I tried correcting it, but to no success.

Default Good Job Larry!

Good job working that out Larry and thank you for sharing your solution.

I felt the Groen Brothers modified RAFs I have flown flew pretty well and I did not encounter anything I felt was squirrely.

They seemed very sensitive to rudder cable adjustment.

Can the rotor touch the tail with the stick full aft?

Paul. That was a major concern when I built the additional keel. The rotor is not even close, or I would have moved the tail feathers closer to the cabin. Good question. Gregg Greminger has been a proponent of "Way back" for the stab position. He was the inspiration for this attempt to get more stability. I flew last night. Winds were apx 6-10 mph.Rarely a bump. I am going to continually increase the speedin higher f winds during this test Phase. The last RAF with the Boyer mod had 10 inches added to the keel length and the gyro flew amazing.

Larry- Looks nice! My two complaints about my SparrowHawk was the wig way it had and the excessive back stick force needed with the power off.

I did not experience the tail wiggle or the heavy stick at idle. I just thought it seemed to have lost that solid stability feeling when I was in wind. May be I was spoiled with the RAF Boyer warrior. This newtail group seems to have brought back that solid stability feeling, but I have not been in winds above 10 mph on the ground.

Stan how are you? Hope all is well. I did not experience the tail wiggle or the heavy stick at idle. My ship seemed to have lost some stability and I didn't feel relaxed when I flew it. The new tail feathers seem to have returned the stability I enjoyed with the RAF Boyer Warrior. Still I will know better when I fly in higher winds.

Where I placed the stabs, I still feel some shakey feeling. My theory is like riding behind a truck and trailer. At the right spot you get the turbulence. That could be what's causing that feeling. I moved the stabs forward 10 inches. Not only looks better, but now this machine is where I want it. I tuned the RAF blades today. Now stick is smooth and cabin hop is gone. Track was off and rotors needed centered in the towers.

Larry, glad you changed the tail feathers, also it was interesting to hear about the

expirement with the tail way back,it looked a little far back to me. Glad it works well

in the original postion. The new tail looks a whole lot better than the tall tail. Great job.

Best regards,
