This weekend I went to one of our hill climb races. We always have a good time because not only are we racing all weekend long but many of us camp out as well so it turns out to be like a big camping trip with about 40 or so friends. It takes about an hour and a half to drive there from my house but this year I had a different idea… why not fly there? It was 58.6 miles as the crow flies so that is exactly what I did.
I was planning to leave Friday early evening but there was moderate turbulence at 8,000ft and lower with strong gusts so I postponed my trip till Saturday morning instead. The flight Saturday was incredibly peaceful and I made it their in only 44 minutes and used less than 3 gallons of fuel.
There are very few aircraft that could do what I did by going out camping for the weekend where there is no airport for miles and miles, fly around all weekend long then fly home when it is all over. Have I mentioned lately how much I love my gyro?

It was great flying formation with you Sat. morning. It was beautiful ! I found out when I landed back at MeadowLake Airport that there was a fly in right below us in the Bijou Basin. We could have had free pancakes, and been the only Gyro's there !

Looks like a great trip.

So can you post any of the racing you filmed from the Gyro?

Mark

Todd,

Way excited to hear that you are using your Gyro that way! I can't wait to do some of that kind of activity myself. What happened to you big "Chain" rotor tie down? I always really like that. Did it finally break due to strong winds? Keep up the great effort. You are a real asset to our Gyro community.

Mark, Thank you for escorting me off and that explains why I saw so many fixed wings in the bijou basin. Yes I will post video footage once I get it uploaded to Youtube.
Doug, I had to travel light and could not get my logging chain in my coat that I use to tie down my rotors.
I always thought you could not really go anywhere in a gyro like mine, I am starting to change my opinion on that now, that flight turned a long trip into a short one and was so much fun.

Way to go friend, how cool is that. Did you drive (race) this year?
Russ

Hi Todd, good to see that you're having fun with your gyro. With all the work piled up around you I was afraid that you'd forget to have fun while helping everybody else to have their share ;)

That's awesome! way to go, that sounds like a great adventure.

Todd- Now that's what it is all about! I bet your surface dwelling buddies were impressed. Way to go. Who needs an airport? Stan

Todd,

Perhaps it is time to start considering some kind of a luggage container to carry a little bit of gear with you. I realize it would have to be limited but I would think with the power you have available from your 4 stroke, you should be able to carry a little additional weight without negatively affecting your performance. What do you think?

Sounds like a good use for a two-place machine! Well done.

How was the dust and the wind flying at a few feet off the deck following the Hill Climb racers?

Mark

Very Cool. That's I-70 next to the track .

I wonder what the guys on the Interstate thought seeing this little black copter following the race cars? Not a sight you see every weekend.
