It's too cold to work in my shop so I'm researching gearboxes today.
The characteristics that I'm looking for is a casing that lends itself to drilling and taping for temperature sensors, sight glass, oil coolers and chip detectors. The other consideration is a gear configuration that is arranged for a vertical shaft. I would like to pre-rotate using a starter motor but I don't know what torque they produce...I'd hate to blow-up the gearboxes by using a motor too strong for the system. Dave, my 4yo grandson is the easiest to keep occupied. I put several screws in a piece of wood and give him a screwdriver which keeps him busy for hours. The 11yo is not so easy! He has his own toolbox and he gets P.O'ed if he can't use it, LOL. Hey, that's what it's all about...spending quality time with the little animals. I just thought...we have a 3/4 scale jeep and rotor system!!!! Rotobuggy? ;D

I've found a gearbox that I think will work on my project. It is rated for 46 hp at 400 rpm. It comes with a heavy and light box, which might be an advantage as far as weight.

yeah Aiden is the same way....loves the elctric screw driver. I usually pre-drill the holes on projects and let him put the screws in. Busy in Korea. Nothing bad...just none stop

That's a heft gearbox as far as loads. Did you scale up your tandem?

Dave,
This is just the next step to see if I can set up the pre-rotator and controls. It'll have all the drive shafts and universal joints that will be needed to fly. I guess this will be the twirl stand for a tandem, lol. The hefty gearboxes are for gust loads, pre-rotation and safety margins. I fully expect to trash these boxes when I double the operating rrpm to meet the FAR part 27 requirements. Hey, keep your head down over there that nut case north of you is real flakey!

The jeep project is nearly finished but I'm down to the things that take alot of time. I'm on the windshield that requires several mortise and tenon joints which is time consuming.
My youngest grandson like to spray paint...anything not just the jeep...tools, the floor, the wall, lol. The oldest has his own tools and he's getting pretty good with using them.
