Interesting. Perhaps it is an attemped compromise between the additional drag of two engines and fuselage versus longer legs due to a larger single engine and propeller.

The new (September 2012) issue of Air & Space (Smithsonian) has a six page article on the Boomerang, and its excellent engine-out handling characteristics.

Boomerang landed here at Scappoose awhile back. EDIT: DUHHH, Just read the article about them coming to Scappoose. When i get back to the office i'll try to find the pics. The construction was quite interesting.

I sometimes wonder if the odd aircraft shapes that Rutan designed over the years were actually used to prove the output of the software he used to develop Spaceship 1.
