Ah, seems like a good enough way to do it! I resorted to a butter knife for the head's dome, and combination of a broken piece of the ring and a jeweler's screwdriver to get the ring grooves cleaned out. The ring is what i used on motorcycle engines before, but that proved useless in this case. The little screwdriver did the trick.
For solvents I used two soaks, first kero then mineral oil. Neither one did much to loosen anything up. I even tried carb cleaner, with toluene and ether! all that did was melt the plastic kitchen scrubby pad I was using to polish the piston dome with. I had everything apart on a bench, so keeping debris out of the lower end was not a concern.

I am walking on a cloud today - literally! I finished my 1-hour test of the newly-rebuilt Arrow cylinder, and it ran like a dream!
Got everything put back together in two afternoons, then flew a single, very tight pattern circuit Sunday. Landed, retorqued all head nuts, and called it a day. The weather was too rough to fly in, it rained Monday. Today I flew the last 45 minutes of fuel out of it, landing several times to check for leaks and such. Perfect flight testing conditions, and a perfect engine flight test. Except for one little mistake I made. My daughter wanted to take my picture. I set my $400 Wiley-X goggles on the back seat. Mistake. Big mistake. HUGE mistake. I took off, made a REALLY tight 180, flew the pattern two more times before I stuck my head out from behind the windshield and realized I had wind blowing in my eyes when I should instead be wearing very expensive eye protection. I dropped down to 20 ft AGL and combed the area I covered during my first few turns etc., from the air. There were my Wiley-X's!!! They fell onto the taxiway! I landed, and expected the worst. Not a scratch on them. No tiks, chips nor dings in the lenses whatsoever!!! CAN YOU BEEEEELIEVE IT? Wow. Thank you, God, for watching over my sunglasses today. I'll be sure and pay it forward. And thank you for this beautiful day, and our family's good health. This is the end of another chapter, the end of my contributions to this thread. THanks for reading, and double thanks if you took the time to post a comment. I really appreciate everyone's posts.

They are truely amazing, and I love them every time I put them on. How on Earth they fell out of the gyro, missed going through the prop, landed on the pavement and had nary a scratch on the lenses is a small miracle as far as I am concerned.
