Bryan,

I talked to Doug and figured it out. When you roll the throttle off with the governor on the engine does not spool down fast enough to split the needles. When you turn off the governor or turn off the fuel you get an immediate split.

Bryan- I simply check my sprague clutch on pre-flight....and each flight I always do a quickstop for the fun and practice of it....and simply see the rotor tach go past its normal 620 rpm that it stays glued at in flight. Post flight I check it again manually.

Just got off the phone with Andy who sells the aircraft lithium batteries.

Currently I have (2) PC680 batteries at 15.4 lbs each plus an additional battery box and cross cables that probably weigh another 3 lbs for a total of roughly 33 lbs.

These batteries have a cold cranking amp rating of 220 each for a total of 440 amps.

It appears that Adam can build one with roughly 500-600 amps that weighs around 5 lbs and for a cost of $400 or less.

So, I would lose 28 lbs of aft weight that I do not want anyway and then can also lose the 22 lbs I have as ballast in the cabin for a net loss of 50 lbs and the simplicity of a single battery (along with my small backup.)

Thoughts?

I say GOOOOO! Good decision. Even on my Brantly, If I threw 50# overboard, you could really tell it when trying to get out of a tight area, or carrying a couple of fatsos.

Todd- I have to mirror what Bryan said.... Good decision. If I didnt need the ballast back there to balance my butt, I would have already done that. That turbine is not lacking for power in the hottest of days. You lose another 28 pounds and you will have to carry sandbags to keep from climbing! Stan

Stan,

Actually, it is a 50 lb decrease since I could leave off the 22 lbs of ballast I have. I think I will do it. How much wear & tear is saved on the elastomerics, gear boxes, etc when they are lifting 50 lbs less over a 1000 hour timeframe? Probably save a little fuel as well.

Andy wants me to put an ammeter on the battery cable when I start the machine, so Friday before I head for Mentone I am going to do that and record the Amps required for the start sequence with all systems on. I am guessing that the peak will be around 400 Amps or so. I did a test on a 2011 Chevy Impala and it drew 252 peak Amps when starting. Of course, it starts in less than 3 seconds. I will assume the most draw on the Helicycle will be until 30 % while the starter is still engaged.

Now Bryan, you need to help me. Stan has the fastest and my machine will never be as pretty. I need your help to make mine smoother. I'm thinking about buying the dynavibe balancer. Wanna help balance it? We can then help Stan do his so he can have the best again

I'm a good ways away but ANYTIME you want to do a vacation in loverly North Georgia...I would be absolutely delighted to help smooth out the vibes.

Is a DynaVibe that new little one that is basically the same as the DSS except 1/2 the price?

How about I come pick you up in the Bonanza (you can fly - I will sleep) and we will do it here? I'll take good care of you and show you some world class cars at the best automotive museums in the world.

Sorry to get slightly off topic, todd. I was watching your helicycle video and stumbled onto one of your bonanza videos of you flying just above cloud base with the auto pilot on and jamming to some xm radio. That is the cats meow! I had some training in a cessna 182 but I never played with the auto pilot :-)

Jeff,

Some of my most enjoyable flying is when it is overcast for a full week here and I head south to Florida. You climb for 5 minutes in the dreary soup and then it is like you see heaven. The tops of the clouds just shine and look so pure. The sun warms you and all stress leaves you. Skimming the tops and listening to music is just awesome.

Boy! That would be a good way to do it! After thinking about it a little more, and since I am so ignorant about the Helicycle, It would be best if Doug Schwochert could be present too...just thinking out loud???

Man! It's getting costly now, huh?

WOW! That sounds like a great idea for a DAY-TRIP! I would love to. Are you sure a loudmouth hanging around wouldn't bother you? I try my best to be quiet and soft-spoken, but it never works out!

ACTUALLY I'D BE REAL QUIET, AND WATCH & LEARN!

Put a location on this map, and give me the address for my car GPS.
