That alone is a good report. Flying a helicopter , or building and flying a helicopter is not all that hard to do. To put together the budget to fly your own helicopter takes some financial planning that is not natural to the aspiring pilot. Save and spend every spare nickle you have and give it to a helicopter flight school. You will be broke after about 30 hours. The good news is that you will have 30 hours in your helicopter flight log. And no pile of shrapnel in your garage that the wife , and neighbors , and friends call your crazy dream. Instead , they will introduce you as the neighborhood helicopter pilot who has 30 hours in his logbook. Best wishes in your financial planning tomb2b Arnie |

Dear Arnie, I wanted you to know how I appreciate the way that you responded to Tom's inquirey. The words you chose, and the way you put them shows a polite consideration and decent respect for Tom. Your words "crazy dreams", yes I have had to endure such. Recently one friend said "why don't you give up on the dangerous notion of flying that thing and just keep it in your man cave for ornamentation". Sometimes I think that I should do this very thing, but I have this "crazy notion" that I DO want to fly my own bird, up up and away, you know what I mean? Also you said: a pile of scrap metal in the garage or the guy down the street who is admired for flying a helicopter. Apply due diligence as a student and as a PIC, and may we get to experience the latter. Dream on guys and gals, and may the "Force" be with you. MJD.

There's at least one member of this forum who owns and flies one regularly! He also has an R-44 Clipper.
His name is... Ed DArcy 'Turbo' R-44 N7511G 940 hrs / RV-6 N26ED 4,100 hrs / gyro N46ED 40hrs Stuart FL / S Windsor Ct / Virgin Gorda BVI Last edited by bryancobb; 07-19-2012 at 06:12 AM. |

If Tom is the person I think he is, he has owned a few B2Bs and is a helicopter pilot. With that said, I think the Mosquito is a nice little machine and is about as good as you can get for an experimental with a two-stroke. I am a little biased since I just bought a Helicycle and think that the turbine is far superior. Also, after seeing both machines I believe the Helicycle is much more stout and has more total flight time to back it up. You can buy a nice one already built for $50k or so.

I've built and flown two Mosquitos, an AIR and a XE. Didn't like the XE that much and got rid of it, but the AIR is still the most fun helicopter I've ever flown. It gets flown once or twice a month whenever the itch gets too much. The Mosquito is brilliant fun messing around locally, especially at low level. It's not that good for going from A to B, to do that that I fly a gyro. Oskar |

sounds like you are more interested in tinkering than flying. there are builders and there are flyers. that can be a big decision for us.

I you are going to do that just fly your Brantly. There is nothing great about the Rotorway Airframe anyway. Why don't you look at the Helicycle instead? |

HI well I got the rotor way for a little work that i have done and i do not like a belt driven helicopter. that is all said and done how i got the helicopter that person lost a tail belt in the wrong place had a little mishap not bad tho.lucky he was a good pilot...but any how i still have a brantly that i fly good helicopter... but they don't make parts for theme any more and probably wont either. so i am looking into other things.i do not want to buy something like the mini-500 that i had built and flown. they had a lot of problems.back in the day and i really like the mosquito very good design but the problem comes in is they design a helicopter they do not test it enough why i will never no??.. so i came up with every one who buys one is the test man to see how long it last.. my guess.but your right helicycle would make a good one.there a good helicopter to start be a shame to redo one..just trying to figure out a route to go with thats all there is some pretty smart people on this forum.but some times you never get the right answer you want to hear...does not hurt to ask.....thanks tom
