There is no "preferred method" for pre-rotation. There are lots of ways to get it done and it pays to keep an ear open for the guy that "found a better way." Each has drawbacks. The "holy grail" seems to be a device that will get your rotors to about 200RRPM (rotor RPM) without wind assistance. Few devices do that, though many get close.
A determining factor is going to be which engine you have. Some engines are easier to adapt to certain schemes. If, for example, you aren't going to have much of an electrical system, then I'd opt out of the electric starter-motor variety. These are experimental aircraft. It therefore pays to ask as many questions as you can and see and put your hands on as many of the variables as possible before you plunk down the cash. Most airport FBO's or pilot shops have the current year copy of the FAR/AIM book. It is a monster and a horrid read, but worth having. Many of your questions will be answered definitively in that book.

Vance, I didn't know the minimum duel hours of the total minimum hours needed for either licence, thanks for clarifying.

Quote:
The best thing you could do to learn about Gyroplanes would be to make it a priority and take some vacation during the first week of Aug. and come to Mentone IN. for the PRA Convention. You will get a chance to see all different kinds of machines, to get some flights with different instructors and talk to hundreds of different people and get all their differing opinions first hand. I know that will cost you some time and some money and it's last minute and it won't be easy to get the time off, but if you don't make this a high priority, you aren't likely to end up being a Gyro Pilot anyway. It will be very innconvenient, and cost lots of money and be a challenge for you in many unique ways and only those that REALLY Want it Bad, typicaly are able to hang in there and pay the price that will eventually have to be paid. Your willingness to find a way to get to Mentone should tell you a lot about where you are at (attitude wise) and how likely you are to be successful in your quest to become a Gyro Pilot. I wish you all the luck in the world, but what you will really need is determination and committment to your goal. I hope you make it!

Doug, I will look into seeing if I can go. I think it would be a great time. No matter what I want or how dedicated I am in becoming a gyroplane pilot, I currently wont be able to be one. I don't have the money or storage to keep the thing. Seems every time I get some money saved up, something breaks on this house. lol But me not becoming one by the end of the year isn't going to take away my passion. I have to find a place where I could build and keep one. I am a planner so I like to plan things and do research before I jump in. I am going to get an hour instruction before I go spending thousands too to make darn sure I would love to fly a gyroplane.
Jay, awesome pics! That engine looked like it was fun to build. I did not know they had fuel seats. I read an article about a guy that caught on fire while flying over a school in a gyroplane and sacrificed his life to maneuver it away from the children. There wasn't much left. I see you went from a nose to an enclosed. Jon, thank you for explaining to me that pretty much each gyroplane is custom built to the needs of the pilot and equipment being used. |

Chris, She hasn't taken to the sky's yet, she's ready for her airworthiness inspection.
I have 8 hours with Ron Menzie, and a whole week slated for training with Mike Burton the last week in August. It's been a long haul for this old man, nearly there.
