The reason I have offered the lower rear motor mount for coyping and the Mazak program for copying the short re-drive housing for the flat face crank, is that I think for the Weber engine to be a success in use on the gyro (or anywhere else) it will need to follow the same format as the VIKING engine, and that is a "bolt on package deal" or as close as possible. The user will still most likely have to create his (or her) own plumbing setup for each different style of airframe and maybe chose there own oil cooling setup but other than that it really needs to be a "bolt on package" and that is going to require a "source" of ready fabricated parts, like the motor mounts, exhaust manifolds and ECU unit with harness. It would be a shame to have to "out source" these items

No one has given up but we did lose Mark Carmouche AKA Friendly as SADDLY he passed away.
His was almost finished and would have been flying by now!

Hey everyone, new guy here. Actually registered in 2006 but I guess if you don't post they delete the account. Anyway finished reading this thread a few days ago and wanted to make a comment or two.

First, it's really too bad about Friendly.

About the oil cooler system and if it should be before or after the oil tank. Don't underestimate how much heat those plate type heat exchangers can get rid of. I also don't know where in the water circuit the stock placement was, but that could have also been used to prevent over cooling the oil and condensing vapors since it would be controled by the thermostat.

Hi Cory

Yes it was a major blow to loose "Friendly", I sure hope someone will pick up his work and finish it, he was so close to having an engine in the air.

The question of having the oil cooler before or after the resivour tank centers around the condition of the oil coming out of the sump. It will have some degree of "air" blended into the oil and this could present a problem with the "gravity flow" through the cooler if the cooler is after the tank, the tank is where the air is "stripped" from the oil---- so this is, in my estimation why the designers put the oil cooling before the tank, where it is under some light pressure from the sump ejection pump.

The selection of either "air cooling" or "oil/water" cooling is somewhat a matter of choice of the builder. Any oil/water cooler will for sure dissipate huge amount of heat for its size, but the "plate" type for sure does need a good "heat sink" to mount on (as it has in the snowmobile) and our gyros some times only have a section of 2 x 2 tubing for such mounting but have LOT's of air available.

My final choice was the oil/water type of cooler and have it installed in the radiator like transmission coolers are used, this makes for a very neat plumbing arrangement. This of course involves a custom built radiator, but this can readily be done by a number of custom radiator manufactures like Griffin radiator, (yes they are expensive) .

I hope someone takes over where Friendly left off, been anxiously awaiting a flight report as I've read this thread. Very sad to know that he's been gone the whole time I was reading this.

I don't think having the exchanger mounted to a heat sink would make any significant diffrence since only one side of one passage will be in contact with what ever it's bolted to. There are many thin plates in them and the contact area between the two liquids is very high. Just a thought.

I think this engine has lots of potential. I did find out that a new weber turbo engine is about $10K, and the 850MPE should be out yearly 2013.

Woud love to build one for a Little Wing someday.

Hi Cory
I think the 850 is already out, whether it is available as a "crate engine" I don't know, what has suprised me is where it is made (can't openly say right now) but it will be a suprise. There are some new features that are good and some that I like about the old 750 better, unfortunately the "adapter housing" for the 750 will not fit the 850 but that is not a crisis, just a temporary inconvienence. I agree on the potential of both the 750 and the 850, once they have some hours here in the USA (already got them in Europe) they will become a "standard" in there HP catagory. Personally I am not inclined toward the Turbo model as the first test of the basic engine, I think it should first be a NA then move on to the turbo, when we use these in aircraft that is probably the most tough test there will be next to marine. Racing is not a good test in my opinion because in racing you are only concerned about making it throught that one race and winning. I want a little more "comfort" than that.

Brent

I think I gave you a wrong name, don't think "napsover" is the same guy.

Not totally sure but think he had a unusual name like Blaze Carmouche ??

That's much more reasonable. Wonder why the huge price difference between them and Weberpower.
