I have decided to do a glass panel. Most likely using Levils AHRS - G Series. I have been told that they can re-write the software for me to give me main rotor speed as well.

Barron,

I have a question. What would be the chance of making a very light weight, carbon-composite "doughnut" fairing that encircles the rotor.

Bear with me for a minute here before rolling your eyes. If said fairing could be made to avoid wind loading by making it a very slippery shape with periodic bracing extending to the craft all around the rotor's circumference. See it almost as a very lightweight "ducted fan" housing that prevents the relative wind from loading the rotor head-on or forming a relative vacuum behind it.

This would free-up the rotor to draw air from below and not have to deal with air forced against it from forward movement. By calculation, it looks possible that it would take a lot of forward load without moving or buckling. I suppose there would have to be a way to partially fold it for storage but it seems that it would be a cheap, elegant solution to the "100mph" limit.

Just a thought. Thanks.

KD

KD-

Here's a concept that worked. Maybe it isn't what you're thinking, but interesting anyway. Built and tested by Jim Vanek's father Chuck Vanek. Somewhere back in time this was tested to find a 10 MPH increase.
We still have the molds....

Jon

PS: What 100 MPH limit are you talking about? We break that speed regularly with our SCII and M912.

Has three tail rotors been used before ? I would think that while engine is running all three would give direction and when engine is out the two outside tail rotors would still be in air stream so you would still have control.

Three tail-rotors were used by a person who's previous experience was obviously in fixed wing aircraft.

Not sure on that. Still in the learning curve. But as I understand it ducted fans have yet to be functional.

Thanks for the information. But I plan on keeping it as simple as possible.

Air and Space 18-A
Sport Copter II

Both have triple rudders. I thought I saw a gyrodyne with triple rudders, but I don't remember for sure.

Ducted fans are more efficient than open props under 100 MPH.
