Gary,
I started the prerotator for the first time last week and was able to get 205 rpm in no wind conditions. Not too bad for a brand new motor that's not broken-in yet. These engines don't develop full power until fully broken-in (about 10 hours run time?). By the way, I'm using a Schwinn bicycle speedometer for a RRPM tach, which works well after I realized that I could not run the sensor wires in the same conduit as the prerotator kill switch wires. The Tach would reset itself when ever the goped engine was running. the tach worked fine when I re-routed the sensor wires away from the ignition source.

That gyro turned out really nice Mike. Congratulations. I hope you will have a lot of hours of happy flying out of it

Default It's official-Anisoptera is airworthy!

I'm a little late posting this. Two weeks ago today, Mike and Scott from the MIDO drove up to do an airworthiness inspection on my gyro. They went through it very carefully, pointed out some minor deficiencies (missing cotter pin, loose nut on rudder horn, too short bolt and not allowing 2 threads to show past the nut, etc) and allowed me to fix them on the spot. Overall, they were impressed with the overall construction. Including the paperwork it took them just under 3 hours. Apparently, the first time pass rate is about 50%. They also complimented my completion of the paperwork. I owe this to the EAA. I bought their guide, Step-by-Step Certification Guide, and with only one minor omission, they rarely see the paperwork this complete. I highly recommend this guide and plan to join the EAA as a member.
Mike and Scott are straight-up guys, reasonable and genuinely enjoy this part of the job. Thanks again, Mike and Scott!

Thanks, Vance and Jeremy. I'm waiting for my work schedule and the weather to cooperate to do balance on the mains practice.
The signature is the FAA representative's.

Default She Flies!

Yesterday, at KLCI, Laconia, NH,Al, my fellow gyroplane pilot and PRA chapter 39 member, and I trailered my gyro to the airport and did a careful pre-flight and practiced with the differential braking and running the goped pre-rotator. When we were comfortable with the controls and handling, Al taxied the gyro over the a closed runway at the airport where we both took turns taxiing and running up the rotor
I had a few problems with the goped engine (the fuel pump maybe over powering the goped carburetor and flooding the engine). But we were still able to get it running to get the rotor up to speed. I got the nose up a few times but I'm taking my time to get my confidence and skill set up before I start balancing on the mains the whole runway.
Al, with much more experience, was able to balance on the mains very quickly and after a few runs back and forth on the runway, felt confident enough to roll up the throttle and up she flew! Al kept it below 10ft AGL
and flew 50 to 75 yards before setting it down nice and easy. It's very gratifying to see something you've built do what it's designed to do. Of course I had left my camera at the hanger on the other side of the airport but maybe that's just as well-less stress for the test pilot without the camera. I'll get pictures/video next time. It was getting late so we ended the day on a good note.
Now when I pull into a gas station with the gyro and trailer and people stop and ask does it fly? I can answer "Oh yeah, like nothing else!"

Default How I spent my summer

I received my 90 day solo endorsement from Chris Burgess early August and spent many hours balancing on the mains to get it. Getting the gyro "tuned" up for flight has been an ongoing process. I've installed and adjusted a trim spring, solved a few prerotator issues, aligned the main wheels after replacing the tires( 20 plus hours balancing on the mains wore out the first set of cheap tires) along with tuning and balancing the carburetors for even EGt's and setting the pitch on the prop so that the max rpm is at the right number. But, I'm very pleased with the results, seems very stable and predictable to fly.

One of the first crow hops and the smile on my face!

Thanks, Steve.
Here are a couple of videos of me flying my gyro. (I like the sound of that!)
