Well, my 20 year old son Tyler was right on time at 0600 hours. We got everything loaded, made it to the airport and by 0730 hours we had the rotors on and was ready to go. I didn't happen to get onto the runway as fast as I would have liked.

A couple older gentleman arrived and for the next 45 minutes we talked about Gyros. I did make it onto the runway but made it down and back one time before the wind started.

Oh well, looks like I am a airport bum as the older guys called themselves.

You guys be safe.

Bryan

That "Conversion to Single" tutorial you wrote is excellent Leigh! I can learn a new concept faster by reading the words than I can by listening to them.

One sentence did stall me for a bit, until I figured out what you meant. "The gyro will lift off and you will notice that, by adding more power the gyro and easing very slightly forward to keep the gyro from going too high, it will accelerate rapidly once clear of the runway." You are better with sentence structure than me, so I'll let you edit this as you see fit.

I believe this training paper should be added to the forums training section because it is informative, easily understood and gives one mental pictures while reading it.

Thanks for pointing that out Ed, I do try and go through it and proof read carefully but sometimes things do get missed.

It should have read.

"The gyro will lift off and you will notice that, by adding more power and easing the stick very slightly forward to keep the gyro from going too high, it will accelerate rapidly once clear of the runway."

Again thanks for the feedback Ed, that is another thing I try for, to try and create a clear sequence or 'movie in the mind' rather than a string of do's and dont's. To hear that it succeeds is very gratifying.

It's one in my sets of training notes I am writing up while studying under my Instructor.

Glad you liked it Jeff.

Your change has been added to my copy and saved!

Sorry I forgot to say on page 4 Leigh. It took me awhile to find that sentence again .

It was tricky for me learning to do this.....very mechanically from a mental point of view. It had to become part of me. It's alot for the brain to handle, but if you get into any kind of trouble- first and formost CUT THE POWER, and let everything settle. That silly rule was hard to remember trying to manage the rudder and rotor in the beginning. Best wishes.

I put my rotors on by backing the gyro up to my car. Put a pad on the roof. Put one end of the rotors on the pad. Then walk up a ladder and put the rotors on.

GraemeClarke,

I don't understand what you mean. I put my rotors together laying on 4x4's on the ground and string them. So what your telling me is lay one end of the rotor on the roof of your car and then walk up the ladder with the other end? My question is what do you do with the other end thats still on the ground when your trying to put the other end on the roof of your car?

I just can't catch a break it seems. The only day we haven't had any wind and that was on Saturday and I spent the day at a flyin in Dillsburg, Pa. My good friend Larry Boyer was there and graciously gave me a ride in his RAF which was a blast. I have been getting up at 0430 hours to go to the airport and what do I find when I walk outside? WIND!!

Got to ride the mains before I can solo. I'm off duty Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Can anyone guess where I will be?

You guys be safe!

Bryan

Default I feel your pain Bryan!

When I first soloed The Predator I had a very low wind limit at an airport where wind and fog is common.

The preflight often took me 40 minutes and I had to wait until it was light because the lighting in the hangar was not bright enough. I tried to do as much as possible the day before in a post flight inspection. I feel there is a lot that needs to be checked just before flight.

Often the fog hung around until the wind began to blow over my limit.

It was very frustrating to have the wind come up while I was taxing the mile to the runway.

I am glad that I was rigid with my wind limits because I have since encountered many situations that might have overcome my limited experience with unpleasant results.

This too shall pass and the wonderful of pilot in command will open to you.

Thank you, Vance
